Re: Filling in neck holes and pot holes.

for the neck holes, you can use dowel glued in and then redrilled.

For the pot holes I'm not too sure since there's not a whole lot of surface area for the glue to hold onto strongly...it could create a pretty weak joint unless the dowel/piece of wood filling the hole is an ultra tight fit before gluing. Normal wood glue creates a bond that is usually stronger than the wood itself, provided the joint is an ultra tight fit. If it's anything but a tight fit, then the plug will not be properly bonded, and soon as you go to redrill a hole in it, it'll probably pop right through the old hole.

Dowel 'em. The pot hole will hold, but like CTN said, make sure it fits snug.

Re: Filling in neck holes and pot holes.

Remember that a srore- bought dowel is going to have end grain up on the ends of the cylinders. Use a plug cutter to get a parallel grain pattern on those pot hole fills. CTN makes some good points as to the gluing problems of a 3/8 '' fill.
I usually use blacktop to fill potholes J/K lol

Or use something with a tight grain. The walnut dowels I've used sand smooth, but they take more work to finish, walnut is pretty damn hard.

Re: Filling in neck holes and pot holes.

they make the small plastic divots that cover holes in cheap particle board furniture
I cant remember what they called them
but I found some at the local hardware store
in black and natural (aged white / cream)

I used them to fill unwanted holes in pickguards

small carriage bolt painted black would do your task
just remember the nut for the other side

Re: Filling in neck holes and pot holes.

Minwax makes an epoxy wood filler that ive used before to fill unwanted pot holes even used it to fill an unwanted neck pickup route before. Its good stuff works well.

I believe that's what he was referring to. I think he wanted to make a bridge humbucker only single volume pot guitar.

All of the wood fillers I used back in the day on those Deans shrunk on me over time. You might want to ask Aceman how his is holding up, he did the same. For the pot holes, I glued a coin to the inside of the control cavity and then used filler on top before I went the painted carriage bolt route.

Re: Filling in neck holes and pot holes.

Glue a thin square of wood (1/8" plywood or even balsawood) to the back of the hole first. Then fill the hole with a dowel slightly shorter than the thickness of the guitar top. Use wood filler (or sawdust mixed with Elmers glue) to fill-in/smooth out the remaining defect. Then use some wood grain filler and sanding sealer. By ending up using a thin layer of wood filler rather than filling the entire hole with the filler, it won't shrink as much and you can effectively make an unnoticeable repair. And you won't have the end grain of the dowel exposed.

A couple extra steps, but it will same a lot of time in the end and you will end up with a perfect repair of the hole which will hold up to much abuse.
