Final speaker decision!? THD and WGS content.

Hi guys,

I have a Bogner 212 with Vintage 30s and a Stone Age 212 with WGS Invaders. I have a THD 212 with stock THD Longhorn/Vintage speakers. My problem is they are high wattage speakers and I tend to prefer the feel and tone of 60 watts speakers or less. I am thinking of doing the WGS Vet30/ET65What ya think?

I was thinking of the Celestion Creamback and Lynchback but I am so tired of spending money on things like pickups and speakers when there are so many band for the buck options!

Yea. The vet30 is their vintage 30. Not tried the et65. But those two speakers are 60 and 65 watts. I never got that "pushed" feeling with speakers rated at 60 plus watts.

If I'm way off on your question I apologize.

Re: Final speaker decision!? THD and WGS content.

When I play my V30's loudly I can hear them breaking up. They get a little cloudy/blurry in the mids and lows. But not enough to comprise clarity or punch.
You might dig the Reaper HP's. They will offer an nice alternative to the V30's and Invaders.

Re: Final speaker decision!? THD and WGS content.

With my Invaders and Hellatone V 30s I love the response and feel. The CL80s are a little to stiff for how I like things to feel. I might go Vet30/ET65 or Reapers. Maybe even the Celestion Lynchbacks but they are expensive!

I played a Marshall 412 at a studio the other day and loved it! I have to find out what was in it.

Re: Final speaker decision!? THD and WGS content.

Since you have V30's in the Bogner I would go with two ET65 or with two Greenbacks/Creambacks/Lynchbacks for a different sound. If you mix speakers make sure they have the same sensitivity, not how many watts they can handle. You can also put Alnicos for a more different sound.

It's not just the speakers in the Marshall cab, it's the size and massive sound of a 4x12. Despite what people say no cab sounds like a 4x12 unless it's a 4x12! I had all types of cabs and I kept a 4x12 and the THD 2x12.

Re: Final speaker decision!? THD and WGS content.

Since you have the GB type and V30 type covered, Id go with the ET65s or Reapers. The Reaper HP is a 50 watt, like the Invader is the 50 watt version of the Green Beret.

From experience with a '65 type speaker, when you push the hell out of them, they can get a little sludgy, but they have a HUGE low end and FAT mids. Highs are pretty creamy from what I remember. If the Reaper HP is a slightly sweeter G12H-30, then it will be aggressive and loud, thick, but bright and articulate. It's kinda like if you were to cram a lot of V30 and GB traits into one speaker. Like the high end presence and growly lows of the GBs, with the big mids and tighter feel of the V30.

I already have Greenbacks in my opinion in my Stoneage with the Invaders! :)

WGS says the ET65/Vet30 is the best pairing they offer!!!

On the 412 thing.....Nah, I have owned lots of 412 cabs, oversized, etc. My OS212 Bogner cab sounded better than my 2 Marshall 412 cabs and Mesa 412 I sold. Plus, I will never ever ever again gig with a 412, so why bother, LOL!
I used to A/B my Bogner 212OS next to both my 412 cabs and it was hard to hear a difference in the band. In fact, with the semi open back of the Bogner, I would argue it sounded bigger. The guys in the band pointed that out as well.
Plus, what am I trying to prove? Smaller cabs are easier to move and sound just as good. Audience doesn't care.

Thanks brother! Do you know anything about the THD speakers??? Longhorns I have! They are 80 watt Classic leads basically. I am thinking ET65s or Reapers.

Sorry, dont know too much about the THDs. If they are CL80-ish, I can see where you would hink they might be a little 'stiff'.

Re: Final speaker decision!? THD and WGS content.

My Bogner has the V30 covered perfectly. My Stone Age has the Greenback vibe covered. I just want a different flavor with my THD. The Longhorns are nice but fairly neutral. I want big sounding speakers so maybe I stay with the Longhorn CL-80s. I don't know that the ET-65s will sound as big. Bruce Egnater once said nothing works in a small cab like Classic Lead 80s.

Re: Final speaker decision!? THD and WGS content.

The ET65s will sound as big, but have a rounder, warmer tone. The CL80s can sound a bit 'sharp' but are a VERY clear speaker. They hold together very well at loud volumes too. The WGS Lead 80s supposedly take some harshness out of the top of the CL80. I dont know how the THDs would sound in comparison. Mixing either a V30 or Reaper would sound awesome with te CL80s though.

Re: Final speaker decision!? THD and WGS content.

Classic Lead 80s I have used have been dark, with no harshness anywhere. That said, I am thinking ET65/Vet30.

Re: Final speaker decision!? THD and WGS content.

I would avoid the WGS BL80 in this case. It's got a big lowend but is also very dark and it comes across as inefficiency next to speakers like greenbacks & V30's.
You won't be dissapointed with the Vet30/ET65 mix, it sounds good and works in many applications. I would just be worried that you might like the Vet30 better than your V30's, or not nearly as much as them. Thus causing another issue in your speaker quest,

Are the WGS BL80s that much darker than the Celestions? The Celestion CL80s mixed wickedly well with both V30s and Greenbacks.

Re: Final speaker decision!? THD and WGS content.

I'd go with an et65/reaper hp combo. I had a retro30/et65 combo and hated the retro. Replaced it with another et and love it. Great cleans and awesome gain sounds, IMO of course.
I like the reaper hp on its own, but never tried it with an et. I think it may just work.

I've never played the CL80 in person. But the BL80 with V30's worked fine, just wasn't great IMO. The V30 really stood out. The BL80 has basically zero treble freqs. But the mids are pleasant and the lows are stiff and DEEP.
I've just narrowed my speakers down to V30's and V12's, so I turfed most all my other speakers in order to maintain consistency and perspective.

So two ET65s or mix a Reaper? I thought the Reaper was best for clean?
