Finally...a NAD!

Phantasmagoria

watch where you point that sabre
Well, after a week of it being stuck in customs and a whole lot of bull**** ..this spanking new beauty finally landed up today!

I'm totally in love hehe ..this thing just SINGS/SCREAMS on the lead channels (very Soldano SLO-like) with incredible sensitivity/dynamics & gobs of harmonically rich sustaining saturated sweetness ..but it also has awesome cleans (fender-ish) and a very sweet sounding crunch (classic VH to AC/DC tones all day long!)

Extremely responsive/dynamic & touch sensitive not to mention it pushes some serious air through my 4x12. I had CD's and stuff falling off their shelves when I cranked this little beast up halfway haha ...it really kicks hard & it's loud as hell!

Lots of options with the tubes being freely interchangeable with other octal types...I've only tried it with the stock tubes (4x EH 12AX7's/2x Sovtek 5881's) so far (seeing as it just came in this morning lol) ..& it sounds phenomenal out of the box. More to come...

Re: Finally...a NAD!

New amps are the best. It's almost like getting all new guitars and pedals.

Can't watch the video, what is it?

Re: Finally...a NAD!

Lol, spoilsport... :laugh2:

It's a 28W (class A) Cicognani Brutus Live head..brand new (NIB!) all the way from a store in Poland :D

They've been discontinued but are truly awesome little heads.. specs are roughly compareable to a THD Bivalve...but the Brutus is a fire-breathing high gain head with a completely different voicing/pre-power amp design...

Specs:

• Class A single-ended valve head
• Valves type 4 x 12AX7 and 2 × 5881 (or 6V6/6L6/EL34/KT66/6550/KT88 etc.. )

Can't take any pics of mine because I can't find either of my camera's & have a (10 yr) old-skool cell phone haha..But that's ^^ one the seller sent me before it shipped out.

I'll probably do a few demo clips of my own in a while once I've familiarized myself with it...

But this is pretty much what it sounds like with a touch of verb/delay...

VH tone!

Clean... Little wing:

No FX (1:15 onwards)

Re: Finally...a NAD!

Been jamming this constantly since it came in...it's such a treat to play....but I finally had some fun messing about with output tubes last night. I tried a pair of Shuguang EL34's (a bit too middy/lost a little bottom/punch @ practice/low volumes...but a sweet singing tone all the same...), Some NOS chinese coke bottle 6L6GC's (sounded great ..fantastic actually, but with a bit less headroom than the stock Sovtek 5881's), A pair of russian 6P3S which sounded ok but noisy and a bit microphonic too. I finally swapped the stock Sovtek 5881's back in ...they probably sounded the best. Also tried a bunch of different 12AX7's in V1...but again I stuck the stock one back in there eventually. I'd run out of JJ ECC83's (my faves) but have a few of those due soon so I might try them in there as well when they come in...

Overall, it sounded so good out of the box with the stock tubes, that I could'nt get it to sound any better (different ..yes...but not better) with the tubes I had at hand. I'm pretty sure regular 6L6's will sound awesome though. My coke bottle 6L6 GC's (19-20 watt tubes) sounded insane apart from the slightly reduced headroom...and regular 6L6's are 30 watts. I'm thinking I might get a pair of those to try.

Surprisingly, despite the auto bias..tubes seem to run pretty hot and the difference with my power tube swaps was very noticeable even at really low volumes.

This amps sounds awesome at low volumes, growls, sings, sustains forever and works great for late night practice etc....but really blooms/hits it's stride with the volume at about 3 & above. That's when it sounds totally ****ing incredible :D

Took a few pics after I found one of my missing camera's...

Re: Finally...a NAD!

Sweet! I've heard of them but never seen one. The THD's were OK, but the Brutus looks better.

How much?

Re: Finally...a NAD!

I've played a Univalve. It's way different. Not even close in terms of tone/gain etc. The Brutus is a whole lot ballsier & very "hot-rodded JCM 800/SLO sounding" very much a high gain head while the Univalve sounded like a decent blues/rock amp. There really is'nt any comparison as far as tone/performance goes...(not better/worse...just different ..apples & oranges)

Mine cost the (Polish currency) equivalent of €650 + shipping (NIB) but I saw decent used ones offered for as low as €450 on local Craigslist-type sites in Europe (28W "Live" version...there's also an 11W "studio" version that's cheaper) They just would'nt ship them internationally (@#!! haha). These were €1200 new in 2010 and I did'nt come across anything in my research about them having any reliability issues, plus their components/build quality is top notch so I thought the prices they're going for now made them a great buy. Just looked around a whole lot till I found this one available for international shipping from Poland. The fact that it ran on 230V made things even better. :bigthumb:

I wish I could get one of those in the States.

Re: Finally...a NAD!

I'd slap a pair of KT-88's in it and take it for a spin.

Re: Finally...a NAD!

Cool, congrats!

Assuming the clips are accurate, I can tell this is NOT the amp for me lol. But as long as you like it, that's all that counts!! :D

Re: Finally...a NAD!

Thanks guys :beerchug:

...so far I'm really ..really thrilled with this amp :D

The harmonic overtones are totally surreal and it has a "sweetness" to all it's lead tones that I love. It also produces a lot of the guitar sounds I've always had rattling around in my head :laugh2:

The clips are right on the money...practically identical to what I'm hearing when I'm playing it out in front. That's ^^ pretty much the way this amp sounds. I'll do some of my own when I can ...though my recording skills leave much to be desired lol. So does my playing ..compared to those guys up there :lmao:

Couple more dry clips and a decent review on Premier Guitar here. Obviously it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea...but I could tell for sure from the first note I played that it was definitely mine :)

Re: Finally...a NAD!

Having had it for a while now I'm even more certain it's never going anywhere lol. I love just about every sound this thing makes! Gives me a LOT of tonal options ...always very usable & more often than not, totally awesome!

It's very touch sensitive & dynamic ...depending on the output tubes can either be crisp & edgy or warm round & sweet...it always stays relatively tight though & bass tends to never get boomy or uncontrollable, no matter the setting, even though there's plenty of it on tap. The tonestack is perfect in that way..

This amp is very sensitive to different pickups/guitars/cables and the differences are immediately obvious as soon as you change your gear around. It really brings out the tones of the different instruments you're playing (though always maintaining it's own familiar sound all the while)

Tonally, while it's got it's own thing going on, it's pretty easy to dial in a lot of my favourite guiatr tones, both rhythm & lead. The versatility of this little amp is through the roof. It goes from very convincing AC/DC to VH to 70's Priest/Iron Maiden 80's metal to just about anything (doom/death metal ..it's all in there.) The basic tone is really open/thick/meaty ...it roars like a Marshall/Hot rodded JCM 800/Slo, but can also do convincing recto tones on the 2nd lead channel which has a sickening amount of gain on tap. This channel sits somewhere tonally /gain-wise between a (heavily) hot-rodded Marshall & a Dual Recto ....it's that heavy :)

Lead 1 is quite different & is very dynamic with tons of harmonic overtones, very classic 70's/80's rock/hard rock sounding...with more than enough gain for lead playing of any sort...from Jimmy Page to Michael Romeo. It goes from medium crunch to pretty ****ing heavy..

The Clean channel handles just about any sort of jazz-to-classic rock tone there is...most of them very well. Combining the channel toggle switching options (clean/crunch/sexy) with the 3 Presence presets (1."treble & bass boost" Vs. 2."high mid boost with extra edge" Vs. 3."treble & presence boost") gives literally endless tonal/textural options..

Cons:

It has a tad more idling noise than my other amps (not much..just with your ear to the speaker) ...maybe from being Single ended(?) Nothing very obvious though just a slight barely audible hum when you take it off standby.

Can be slightly buzzy on certain settings with certain output tubes at whisper soft bedroom levels (can be EQ'd out) ...never buzzy when you turn it up a bit though!

Knobs could've had some sort of pointer (They do have a dot/groove....but...) It's tough to tell where they're pointing at without a close-ish look.

Output Tubes I've tried so far:

JJ EL34's (very nice - classic Marshall tones!), Sovtek 5881's (stock tubes..also great..very crisp/crunchy and balanced sound), Chinese coke bottle 6L6's (pretty sweet, slightly scooped in the mids), Shuguang EL34B's (Not bad but sounded a bit brittle...I think they need a bit of burning in first) & the Russian 6P3S-E's that are in there right now (A bit rounder/darker, but sound really great!)

All switching Options (Loop Demo):

Crunch (Running Through Presence Settings: 1-2-3)
Sexy (Running Through Presence Settings: 1-2-3)
Lead 1 (Running Through Presence Settings: 1-2-3)
Lead 2 (Running Through Presence Settings: 1-2-3)
Clean (Running Through Presence Settings: 1-2-3)

EQ/Gain Settings (Unchanged For Demo)

Channel_Settings_Small.jpg EQ_Settings_Small.jpg

Treble - 4
Bass - 4
Mid - 6
Clean Channel Gain - 7
Dirty Channel Gain - 6
Volume - 1 (Conversation level)

Guitar: Jackson DK2 (Lace Alumitone Deathbucker Bridge) tuned to Eb (9-42 strings / Eric Johnson Jazz III plec)

Brutus Live's Direct/Slave out -> AMT CN-1 Cab Sim Pedal -> Digital Handheld Recorder (Line Input)

No Effects/Pre/Post Production.

Chimes like Big Ben :D But the video's clipping a bit (set my recording levels too high or something..). I'll do a better (more varied/less annoying lol) demo in a while. My left pinky is badly swollen/unusable due to a nail infection atm..so I've had to use just the other 3 fingers :p

Re: Finally...a NAD!

Well...I can finally use my pinky again! Thought I'd let things rip (a bit...'cause I'm rusty) haha..

Some idle noodling..DI out...no effects.. ("Lead 1" only..3 toggle switch positions) ..Cheesy "Lead 2" demo to follow :D

EQ/Gain Settings:

Bass: 4
Mids: 7
Treble: 6
Gain: 6

Re: Finally...a NAD!

Well, apparently it's a "Parallel single-ended" Class A amp (two output tubes) & it's actually very loud (at least as loud as my 100W SS Randall..which is a pretty loud head). I cranked it yesterday & jammed for a couple of hours (ya, my neighbours love me :laugh2:) and it just tore things up haha ..it LOVES to be cranked. I also tried it with my Strat (single-coils) for the first time and it was insane. I've never heard it (Strat) sound anywhere near as awesome.
