Finally broke out the Tele again!

Well, church set today, I broke out my Tele for the first time in about 6 months. I sold the Duncan Five-Two out of it and went back to a Broadcaster bridge pup in the Callaham 3 saddle bridge. Through the tube screamer, and the Fender Deluxe, you couldn't ask for a spankier tone! It was really awesome. I've never been that deep in Fender tone before. I've always loved buckers and Marshall tones, and have been using them mostly, but dayum it was spot on for what I wanted today.

Re: Finally broke out the Tele again!

Its nice when your tone is right in the pocket.

Re: Finally broke out the Tele again!

It was really surprising considering the huge change in my normal tone profile.

Re: Finally broke out the Tele again!

I never really understood telecasters until I put one together myself.

At that point it went from, "why do people play teles?" to "why don't more people play teles?"

Although I've always been more of a strat kinda guy so I guess it makes sense. But I love les pauls too - it's just when I reach for a guitar it's usually a 25.5" scale one. Idk.

Re: Finally broke out the Tele again!

When I first started, never would have dreamt of purchasing a Tele, much less one with single coils. But then I started toying around with an American Special over the summer at my local GC, and I ended up picking it up. Plays wonderfully, and the Texas Specials are killer. They flat out rock, the breakup is beautiful. Classic rock lives in Teles. They can even handle high gain well, albiet with hum. You pick it up and it definitely becomes clear why they are so popular. Might feel differently if I played one with more vintage voiced pickups though :P

Same here. Never dream t of playing one. Now I am warming up to them and the next axe is going to be a tele.

Re: Finally broke out the Tele again!

I'm in the same boat. Picked up a used lite ash tele w/hardshell for a ridiculously low price a couple years ago with stock duncan a2p's. Its exactly what I was looking for and I will never give it up.

Re: Finally broke out the Tele again!

Teles are great...and the Broadcaster pickup is the best pickup Duncan make IMO. Sounds like a nice Tele. Every time I put one down and play other guitars, I come back to the Tele, and it just feels like home.

Re: Finally broke out the Tele again!

Best guitars ever. Give me a 60's style tele with alder body, maple neck with a rosewood fretboard and I'm right at home. In 15 years of playing I haven't found anything better. Clarity and punch without a harsh highend and every position just works great with no extra gimmicks. I foolishly thought that they were strictly country and western guitars and it took a long time for me to realize that they could rock as well as any other guitar out there including Les Pauls.

Re: Finally broke out the Tele again!

I could never gel with a Tele, way too heavy and uncomfortable but after seeing pictures of the Fender Modern Player Tele I might just have to make this my next guitar purchase. And yes, I know, made in China and not considered a real Fender.

Re: Finally broke out the Tele again!

Well, this one is a maple neck and fret board, Indian cedar body. This is one of the vintage modified Teles from earlier, when they were made in India. It's a fantastic example, and I traded it sight unseen from a member here years ago, and have been loving it since I got it (after a setup). Since I got it, it's been through a few permutations, ending up with an SSL1 neck pickup, and the Broadcaster bridge, with some upgraded locking tuners, and a Callaham bridge. It's an amazing guitar.

Re: Finally broke out the Tele again!

The Tele is one of the most honest electric guitars that exists. It puts the onus squarely on the player. There's nowhere to hide. Anyone who plays well on a Tele and sounds good doing it is obviously a more-than-capable player. I remember seeing a pic of Joe Pass playing a Tele when I was young ... that blew my mind. Still does.

I also love that it's a direct link straight back to the beginning of the electric guitar, before we all turned into guitar scientists awash in oceans of technology. It's like the ultimate reality check.

Re: Finally broke out the Tele again!

The first telecaster I ever played: I ****ing hated it.

Then a year later I decided to try one again just because, and I was dumbfounded. "This is what I've been missing out on? How could I NOT have something like this?" was my thought.

I'm so glad I gave telecasters a second chance. That first telecaster was the ONLY bad telecaster I've ever played, and I like to try near every telecaster in a guitar store. To me, the telecaster is something that just 'is' and 'has it'.

Re: Finally broke out the Tele again!

I am generally traditional with Teles. No neck joint other than bolt on and no bridge pickup other than a Tele single with lots o' twang. I am open to either the old school '72 style Fender wide range HB at the neck or some kind of covered single. The bridge single in particular is one of my favorite of all guitar sounds!

I describe a Tele as being very musical. I just feel inspired when I play one and I tend to create something based on that feeling. A modern day "race" guitar is so easy to play and has so much of everything, it's almost too easy. With the Tele, you have to work at it a bit more, and the radius isn't nearly as flat, so it has a classic feel.

Re: Finally broke out the Tele again!

As I have said before, the Tele is a harsh taskmaster. The Tele is more than happy to take a backseat and let you shine. But, if you are lacking, the Tele is very quick to point out your flaws.
