Finally found a gem acoustic. Alvarez Regent

Found this acoustic in a pawn shop. Looks like dirt, but it sounds incredible. Best sounding acoustic I've ever picked up bar none. It's not a high end model and it's not known for being a hidden gem, but it flat out wastes every other acoustic I've played. This one just speaks to me. Has a super beefy throaty tone to it that just speaks with authority and beauty. It's not brassy or overly bright, but it's just in that range where the treble is heard without being overbearing. The treble errs slightly on the cautious side, but I'll bet a set of phosphor bronze strings will brighten it up just a smidgen instead of the 80/20 bronze martin strings that are on it now. It has a strong sizzling low-mid presence and tight bass to it that just blows my mind. Makes my ears smile with every single strum. It's not a good player. The nut is decent, but the bridge and neck needs some attention. I filed the bridge peice down with a razorblade to improve it a bit, but the neck needs adjustment to make it play better. It is covered in nicks, gouges and dings and it looks like pure crap. Cost me $70 out the door plus a $6 set of martin strings to make sure my ears weren't deceiving me. This guitar blows away every Taylor, Yiari, Gibson, or Martin I've played in tonal terms. Playability needs some work but will improve dramatically with some love and cautious adjustment. She's sitting in the hotel room with me now calling to me like a seductress. She may look badly beaten, but she sings like nothing I've heard before.

I've been hunting a great sounding acoustic for eons. I've played hundreds of them looking for one that speaks to me and 99% of them sounded brassy and bright with loose bass. The best among the ones I tried were martin copies and I wanted some midrange (mainly upper mids), but without all the treble that usually accompanies the mids. Couldn't find one as they all either sounded dull or too bright. Nothing that was thick, sweet and comfortable til now. Even the vaunted Taylors sounded too bright and brassy and not beefy enough. I will say that the average taylor was far better than the rest, but they are costly for sure and the tone I sought still wasn't there. Tonally speaking the average acoustic I've tried thus far has been like a strat plugged into an Alamo Jet amp. Way too bright. Some had midrange with the treble, but they all were unbearably bright and there wasn't enough tight bass for me. Now I have the equivalent of a les paul plugged into a marshall. Thick, meaty and authoritative. Man I just can't believe that this guitar cost me $70.

pics?

Its great when you pick up an acoustic and know it should belong to you, so much more so than electrics.

I learned to play guitar on an Alvarez Regent, but iirc that name was applied to a pretty wide range of instruments. The one I had was less tonally very dark -- had only the barest amount of sparkle even with brand new strings -- and was difficult to play above the 7th fret because of the ungodly high action, but it served me well enough to learn on. Glad you found a good one!

This one isn't terribly sparkly itself. The treble is there, but it compliments the sound instead of dominating it. That's what I wanted in terms of tone. It won't "cut through" in a crowd of acoustic instruments, but it will knock your socks off all by itself. Plenty of guts, but the sparkle is barely held in check. Thick and rich like a Texas Oil tycoons daughter. :werd:

Funny thing is I looked it's value up in a bluebook on the web. On the low end of the condition scale it's worth roughly $70. I paid pretty much what it was worth via the bluebook. I got a steal IMHO, but the bluebook value of these guitars goes for about $165 for one in new condition.

Mine is a 5209 model. Mahogany neck, sides and back. Laminated spruce top (1 layer?). Black binding and rosewood fingerboard and bridge.

that's awesome man...there's nothing like having an acoustic that really speaks to you like that (or any instrument for that matter)!

i felt the same way years ago when i bought my takamine...i literally played hundreds of acoustics until this one and even several takamines...but THIS ONE really got to me! the only other acoustics that i've ever played and like as much was a Gibson Hummingbird and a Gibson Dove...i'll own them someday!

it actually doesn't look that bad man...it's got mojo alright. Nothing like a pawnshop prize huh?

With as subjective as our opinions on electrics are, I think the acoustic stuff is even more personal. Glad you found a good one :D

An Alvarez Regent was the first guitar I ever owned. My parents bought it for me when I was 8 and that's what I learned on. It was bigger than I was. I gave it to my brotherwhen he moved out to California in 1999. He's still got it, as a matter of fact. I remember he told me one time he put electric strings on it because the action was so ridiculously high.

a friend started with a Regent. He had the lights off and I think he was kinda drunk so he sat on it. It's dead
