What a long strange trip its been. Between advice from SD and this forum I think I have found my ideal bridge PU. Its a C5. I wanted an open sounding PU with some balls that could do clean as well as chugga chugga on the harder stuff, good bass, not to middy, good highs without being shrill. I play a little bit of everything from ZZ Top to Led Zep, Satriani, 80s metal stuff and wanted A PU to cover all bases as much as possible. Here is my rundown of what I tried and results to help other RG owners save some time and aggravation. My amp is a peavey triple xxx combo with upgraded tubes. The stock PUs were awful so........
Custom/Custom - Smooth sounding, but way to middy, weak bass, and not enough highs. Good sustain. Noisy pickup probably due to the A2s and coil windings, so...............
Pearly Gates - Better. Way smooth. Sweet highs. Great sustain and harmonics .Just not enough output for the heavier stuff. Fairly quiet PU. If you play classic or southern rock you can't beat this PU. I would buy it in a heartbeat for my Les Paul. Its sweet. So.............
PATB1 - Recommended by a few here, wasn't my sound. Nice bass and highs, but it had weird twangy mids, hard to explain. Sounded like a strat or tele in the mids... wanted to like this PU, also was a tight fit in the pickguard, because of the shape of the PU, some filing of the guard had to be done. so........
Custom 5 - YES YES YES. What I was looking for. Open sounding, tight plentiful bass, nice mids, good highs without being shrill, strong output without overdistorting the sound, chords are clear, single notes are fat and sustain a good long time.....Jack of all sounds if you ask me. Great PU.. Highly recommended in this guitar...
Also a big thanks to the guys at seymour duncan, Alex and Scott, :yourock:for their help and patience in finding my sound, they even went as far as shipping a new PU before I sent the old one back!!!! Great customer service....
