FINALLY found my Amp!

This is long..sorry...I feel like a kid on X-mas :D

After a few months of searching out every mid priced amp combo offering I could to play I decided to spend more $ than originally intended, knowing this would be something I'll keep for awhile. My vox died, and I wasn’t really happy with it anyway. I've spent the last 10 days or so trying high(er) end amps from Peavey, Marshall, & Rivera. And although all of them were nice in some way they all had more than one major quality I didn't care for.

Today I went to go check out some MESAs. I've played Marks of all generations, the original calibers, and fiddled with a couple of Recto heads briefly, but never dropped the $

The MESA F-series combos IMO trounced nearly everything else I played (the closest competition being the Fandango). I played the F-50 for about 40 minutes. I was immediately impressed with the low end response for a half open cab (I HATE open back cabs normally). Also the Clean channel is incredible, rivals any Fender new or vintage I've heard. Same with the low gain tones. I was getting phenomenal SRV type sounds. The high gain mode is super tight, and even at 2/3 gain, it was totally saturating the strats pickups without getting muddy/mushy. Then, I clicked in the contour. It sounded very nu-metalish. With a couple tweaks of the tone knobs I was back to a nice John Sykes type tone: tight low end, incredible sustain, and a subtle "bite" that made my lead passages just sing/cry. Badlands, Maiden, Lizzy, Metallica, Ozzy, Frampton, Zep, Hendrix, Blackmore, Setzer, Jazz & Blues noodling.... anything I could think of to play sounded excellent through this amp. And it FELT great. There just is no subsitute for an all tube amp. Which I knew, but under my previous budget, it got buried in my subconcious ;) Still, the F-50 had a dynamic "feel" that the other tube amps lacked at least in my hands. I was also amazed how well this amp sounded at low volumes. Marshalls (new or old, MV or not) just don't have "the tone" unless you crank those power tubes, neither did the Peaveys or Riveras. The F-50 had a good Power tube coloring of the gain even at low volumes.

I HAD gone to try the F-30 so I played it too. It had a little more top end "sizzle" which sounded very very cool, but just didn't feel as tight and punchy as the F-50 (prolly due to the El84s).

After an hour I asked how much both cost, but I had already made up my mind on the F-50. I knew the extra 2 bills ($1050 for the F-50 vs. $850 for the F-30) was worth it as the F-30 would have been a tone for $ compromise.

When I got home and got around to unpacking it, I was really impressed with the build quality. It's been a while since I really looked a MESA over carefully. Within a minute of powering up and a few minor tweaks, I realized had no need to worry about it not sounding as good at home as it did in the store. Nearly 4 hours later I had to force myself to stop playing :D

My only nitpicks, and these are just nitpicks are: HEAVY: Don't know the mass weight but this thing is a beast, and Reverb overall sounds excellent but at high gain gets drowned out.

As I said, I've played quite a few Boogies in the past, but I never was this impressed. The feel, sound & simplicity of operation is spectacular. I've paid more for amps that didn't have half the playability or tone. Despite being the 2nd least expensive combo MESA makes, this is by no means a "low end" amp.

Re: FINALLY found my Amp!

No need to apologize. Detailed, insightful reviews like this are one of the things that make this forum interesting. Good read. :)

Great post...I had a Tremoverb head that I ordered special back in 97 from Mesa and it was heavy and made great...They make a great product...I sold the Tremoverb simply because it was the wrong amp for my blues/classic rock styles...I really wanted a Marshall at the time, but the Tremoverb I heard in the store sounded great...After awhile the high gain preamp fuzz drove me crazy and I sold it and bought my Cyber Twin...

Show us some pictures of your amp....Best of luck with it..

Re: FINALLY found my Amp!

Good for you. Enjoy the rock in 2005!

Re: FINALLY found my Amp!

Awesome I love the the F-50. If I didn't just buy my V5112 (not that I don't like it) and saved 100 more dollars I could of gotten a used F-50 from a store by my house.

Re: FINALLY found my Amp!

Those amps are something special. I nearly bought an F-30 head a few weeks ago upon playing it. If I find an F-50 head for a reasonable price I may go for it.

Re: FINALLY found my Amp!

Thank you all for the comments :D As you could gather I was completely floored by these amps, and I'm rarely ever floored by most amps other than some modded marshalls I've heard or the VHT's.

I've also found some Boogies to have that fuzzy gain structure that is kind of annoying (to some)..not as "tight" as a Marshall. However the F-50 doesn't seem to have that issue to the same degree, it's def tighter than say the calibers and Marks I've played, as well as the Rectifiers. However, I became aware of some switching/voicing options on the rectifier after I played them that may have eliminated that as well.

Another thing is that the tone controls have def sweet spots, and unless you are compensating for some glaring defficiency of your setup (or going for something radical sounding), the controls should stay in the oh...say..10 o' clock to 2 o' clock position the majority of the time. I usually dime or nearly dime the gain on most amps with the stock strat pups because they are low in output. But I found the gain structure was best in that sweet spot, and it still had plenty for the hard rock styles I play, especially when the contour was kicked in. Keeping the gain "reasonable" reduced alot of that fizzyness without reducing sustain/saturation. (BTW..Mesa makes the most useful/informative manual I've encountered).

Also my comment on the F-30 was not intended to imply the tone was bad..far from it! Just wanted to clarify that it was not personally as satisfying. I simply wanted the tighter low and high end of the 50, and knew from experience I would likely regret not getting the 50, if I based my decision on price and went with the 30.

Another thing..these amps are LOUD. Extremely loud. The F-50 blows away my 1987RI for volume, and the F-30 sounded as loud as most 50 watt Marshalls or Laneys I've played. As mentioned though, unlike most tube amps with a gain control and master which sound like crap because of pre-amp only gain at low volumes, the 30/50 sound excellent at all volumes.

Very impressive amps. Def something special, IMO and a real bargain for the price. It's not the Marshall sound I'm so used to and love, but I'm finding for me, the 50 allows for more "personal tone" from the hands to come though in playing..allowing me to find MY sound..if that makes sense.

Re: FINALLY found my Amp!

So glad you found an amp you like, Jeff! Now, crank it and play some face-melting metal!!
You're welcome to come down to NYC whenever you have the time; we can jam @ Ultrasound. (Perhaps when the album is available?)

Re: FINALLY found my Amp!

t4d

Re: FINALLY found my Amp!

Excellent man, glad you found "your" amp. I haven't played any of the F-series amps, but your review has me wanting to mess with one for a while :). Welcome to the Mesa family (if you weren't a member previously ;))!

Re: FINALLY found my Amp!

Thanx again everyone. Just still thrilled with this amp.

And Ben thanx for the invite. Love to, though I'm not worthy ;) I'm still trying to build my chops back up after a 10 year playing layoff, and can't play 8 hours a day like I used to.

Maybe I can just come stand around and look cool with all my expensive gear I cannot play ;)

Nonsense! Jamming's all about having fun. You have a couple of months to get yer chops together, and then I'm comin' after you!! :D (Besides, I desperately need someone to discuss MST3K with over pints)

We've done a couple of "showcase" rehearsals, where people who write for various European metal mags have popped in b/c we didn't have a show, but they still wanted to see us play. On these occasions, we usually add our own crew from the local metal scene, and they've always been a blast, if not a "real' rehearsal. Maybe we can arrange something like that, when the time comes ...

Wow...sounds cool. Will keep you in the loop

And a bump for George :)

Re: FINALLY found my Amp!

Congratulations, and great find. The F-50 is still the best amp I have ever played, but it was just too expensive. I settled for a Classic 30, the 2nd best amp I've ever played :)
