Finally! Got an OD pedal worth a damn

Long story... short, I Got another tube amp.

A Marshall TSL, I tried a few pedals in front of the crunchy channel, volume high, gain down.... Just couldn't get a tone like all the tube snobs describe.
Same for my last 2 tube amps, 6505+ and a Blackheart....

In a Last ditch effort, before saying screw it, and using a distortion pedal through the clean channel like I always have.....

The EHX East River drive showed up in my mailbox.
Wow! What a pleasant surprise and tonal qualities, it's not hissy, it tightens things up, it sounds rather good. I bet it cuts tight through in a band mix.
Now I'm starting to understand the love of an OD pedal used correctly.

I'm Liking this pedal quite a bit.

Just thought I'd pass that on.

What's next for this old metal head? Maybe a round guitar???

Re: Finally! Got an OD pedal worth a damn

Have you tried a Rectifier?

Re: Finally! Got an OD pedal worth a damn

Did that DS-1 show up yet? I’m betting a little of that and a little of your gain channel will be brutal.

Re: Finally! Got an OD pedal worth a damn

Is it organic sounding? I've been looking at the Tube Screamer ts808.

Edit: Listened to a demo and it sounds good!

What does "organic" sound like?

Where you can still hear the character from your clean sound and it doesn't sound like a beehive.

OK - I have no idea exactly what you are going for, but damn son, if one of those can't get it, the problem is you!

FYI - I'll be in AZ May 20-24

My guess he means a very transparent sound where a lot of the original guitar wood and string decay is present in the tone -like a 335 or Gretsch CG

-like I would consider most vintage style DeArmond pickups "Organic"

Re: Finally! Got an OD pedal worth a damn

How's it compare to a TS-9 or TS-808?

A friend of mine has an ERD. It's great. We have compared it with my TS808 and my old Maxon OD808 and OD9. It's closer to the Maxon in that it's less creamy and more transparent than the Ibanez. It seems to have a hair less output volume too.

Those differences should be due to only parts tolerance, The circuit in the ERD is purely just a TS808. There are no values inside it that are different at all.

Re: Finally! Got an OD pedal worth a damn

Yep, just another 808 but the ERD is kinda underestimated TS pedal. They are cheap compared with a lot of other TS clones & very easily modded!!!!

Speaking of which, I’ve got some pretty great mods for the East River if you’re interested??? I modded the one that I own so it has essentially the same tone & gain levels but a much lower noise floor....

Re: Finally! Got an OD pedal worth a damn

Gosh I forgot about this thread lol.
Yes it is a ts808, and it sounds extremely similar. More like a maxon Than the ibby

It gets this Marshall "there", I think for me, I've been a distortion pedal thru a clean channel guy all my life, and so my ears tend to listen for those nuances, and tonal qualities.

Tube driven OD channels always sound mushy and muddy to me, (except the 6505) but now I've finally got a tone that I can like. And I do really like it. Thanks EHX for kicking my Marshall in the face the way I like it.

I have read it's a clone too, but how come a big company like EHX just offer a part-for-part clone and not get into any legal issues?

Because it's in an EHX Enclosure and says Electro-Harmonix on it. The circuit can be widely used anywhere as it's not something that can be trademarked or copyrighted. Now, had they put it in a green enclosure just like Ibanez, then they'd have a potential problem on their hands. Just as Behringer about that when they released some new pedals some 10-15 years ago at a German NAMM style show with enclosures just like Boss, down to the color and fonts. ;)
