Finally got the Tweed Super mated up with the 2x10

I put two 10" Eminence Copperheads into a used Victoria 35210 laquered cab and finally got to slide my new Mission Amps 5F4 Tweed Super into it. I had been testing it with the 2x12 Eminence Red Fangs that are in my Bad Cat.

This amp sounds just right with the 2x10, although I'd love to try it with a 1x15 as well!

Funny thing is that if anyone looked at it, they'll think it's just another Victoria. It's absolutely dead quiet. No hiss or hum or anything. Bruce managed to tweak out a lot of that, including an adjustable bias pot to boot!

I've got a NOS rectifier in there, 2 new TAD 6L6's, a JJ ECC83S in the PI, a Groove Tubes 12AX7M mullard copy in V2 and a JAN NOS 12AY7 in V1. The transformers were upgraded to the best Bruce has to offer.

What a joy to roll your own. I cannot over-emphasize how rewarding it is. Remember the first time you swapped out pups in your guitar? Or the first time you gave your guitar an excellent set up? It's like that feeling magnified by about 100x.

I love doing this. Too bad I could never make any money at it. But, anyone want me to build them a kit? You buy it, I'll build it for you if you dont' want to do it yourself. Heck, I'd not even charge you anything but whatever it cost me to ship it to you. ;)

What am I thinking.... like I hae the free time. Sorry. :smack:

Re: Finally got the Tweed Super mated up with the 2x10

Yep, he sells a kit that is new (I was one of 2 or 3 beta testers). It's essentially a slightly modified 5F4 circuit. You can either go wth a 1x15 (Tweed Pro) or a 2x10 (Tweed Super) and soon he'll have a 3x10 Tweed Bandmaster. All are pretty much the same circuit Mine has a 4ohm output and an 8ohm output as well. So, I can go either way, 2x10 or 1x15.

This is a 35-40 watt power section. Sounds great. It's got an unused ground switch that I'm going to use to play around and give myself an option of going from fixed to cathode bias. We'll see.

Also, Weber has some new kits, several of them designs that bruce had a large hand in.

KILLER...thats what I wanted to hear, I want a 3x10 Bandmaster so bad I can taste it!!! So, one to the real question...when do we get clips??? I agree...it really does feel good to DIY.

Re: Finally got the Tweed Super mated up with the 2x10

I want a 59 Bassman reproduction, to the T. I always feel like I've got no time to put one of these project amps together......I'm lazy, I want one finished and ready to plug in.

a tweed amp with enough power to gig with ... very cool, Scott

you must be a born amp builder! :)

such a great circuit - I'd bet the 1 x 15 sounds a lot different, and some say that's a great set up for blues.

anyway, congratulations

Sounds cool Scott. You've pretty much convinced me that a 5E3 will be my first amp. ;)

Bruce is my brother...as most of you know. He's an absolute genius! Best amp tech on the planet, and, as one might expect after playing with me all of his life, and listening to me pontificate about tone: Bruce's amps get exactly the tones I love!

Scott: that amp wants to see a 4 ohm load. A pair of 8 ohm 10's in parallel gives you a 4 ohm load. But a single 8 ohm 15" will make the amp sound a little grainy. If you want to try one, it's safe to try. But if you decided you wanted to keep it that way I'd have Ted Weber make you a 4 ohm 15" speaker.

That'd make it similar to a tweed Pro, BTW.

I think the very best 10's for that amp would be a pair of Webers: one C10Q and one P10RT. The Weber C10Q is almost identical in tone to the '66 Jensen C10N and the P10RT is almost identical in tone to the '58 Jensen 'P10R I use in my '51 Super/Dual Professional and the Super I traded to my buddy Rondo for his '00 Les Paul Historic.

Here's some pics of the types of Supers I've owned...though I recovered the one with the ratty looking bottem so it looks like new again.

Here's Bruce's website: http://www.missionamps.com

He make all kinds of kits!

5E3 Tweed Deluxes based on my two oldies, some Fender Champ type amps but better, the Crusader (which I co-designed) and which is basically a single channel Super-Reverb with one 12" speaker but alot more touch sensitivity and personality, and, of course, the tweed Super design Scott has.

He also does great mods and tone tweaks. He is highly respected and posts alot over on Ampage where he's been a regular since the first days of that page.

It's pretty amazing. As soon as I announced I had finished, I was getting hit up with a guy trying to get me to sell him Bruce's layout sheet. If it's good, it's good. But that would be a form of back-stabbing bruce since some of his design is a bit proprietary. He's got this amp set up to where you can change values to tweak the tone dependingon which set of inputs you are using. I'm going to set one up for single coils,t eh other for hummers.

Yep...great idea. That's how my Deluxe Reverbs are set up. One channel for humbuckers & one channel for single coils. Great minds think alike! :smack:
