(FINALLY!!!) im a new PATB1 user!

so i got a PATB1, bridge model, this past xmas. thats right, xmas. there was a fault in it so that it wouldnt fit through a pickup ring (of any sort, including the one it came with) and after a month of hassles i finally have a new one, which i just put in my ltd viper-300 (mahogany/mahogany/rosewood). first thoughts....

if i had to describe this pickup in one word it would be: BALLS!!!

holy hell. definitely a unique sound, but i love it so far. very ballsy (you can take that as punchy, thick, and big yet tight low end). kinda makes me think of an invader without the muddy/undefined qualities. the low end is huge and thick, but surprisingly considering that very tight. no flubbiness that i can hear.

compared to the anderson H3 i replaced with it, the PATB1 is a lot thicker and a bit tighter, lacking the fuzziness/fizziness that the H3 had on the low end.
compared to other pickups, the thickness is the main advantage. yet it really stands out and doesnt sound like itd be lost in the mix. its got a bit more output that the H3, but not as aggressive as other duncans i own (JB, DD, invader). now i really dont wanna say theres a slight fizz to it cause that in theory would be bad (IMO). but it doesnt sound bad at all. adds to the more unique dimension. the cleans are pretty good. the H3 actually had my favorite cleans for a bridge humbucker, but its pretty good here too.

all this was judged through my XXX 2x12. through my PODxt, which tends to sound completely different, it sounds very similar to the H3 (a good thing, as it cooperated with the XT pretty well) but without the fuzz/fizz in the low end and the bit more output is noticable.

overall im very happy with the PATB1, well worth the wait. ill really crank things up and give another report tomorrow

ps- it looks f'ckin cool

sweet, it's good you're happy with the pickup after all that waiting lol

+1 on the less aggressive thing as well, i replaced my screamin' demon with one and it's literally chalk and cheese :D

Re: (FINALLY!!!) im a new PATB1 user!

so after playing it nice and loud today heres the results-

this is a very strange pickup :laugh2: but in an awesome way. it has a healthy high/mids presence that keeps everything tight and able to cut through, and yet theres this huge low end chunk to it. very cool. usually it has to be one or the other, but this pickup covers both grounds.

Yes, PATB's cover alot of bases. My experience with them, the have fatness like an A2 and the tightness A5's usually provide. Add those with a dose of Mojo and you have a PATB.

Re: (FINALLY!!!) im a new PATB1 user!

Happy to see you're happy with your PATB-1.....I've used all three myself (and am in the process of acquiring the Crazy 8 now - same PA design, diff wind, A8 mag), and have had great results with them. Congrats man! :headbang:

Re: (FINALLY!!!) im a new PATB1 user!

Aren't the PATB made specifically for trems (and locking trems at that)? Just curious b/c I've seen a handful of people on here who have installed them in hardtails, and I'm wondering if the spacing is an issue. Also, anyone know the technical difference between the PATB-1 and PATB-3?

Re: (FINALLY!!!) im a new PATB1 user!

Welcome to the club bro!
The PATB design is just amazing!
The full sound ,the harmonics ,the chug ,the balls....I don't know why it's not that popular?
It's still showing that Reputation is over quality...That somehow makes me sad...
Those thing are more versatile than a swiss-tool.

Re: (FINALLY!!!) im a new PATB1 user!

Well, yeah, supposedly PATBs were made for trem-spaced guitars but I think you can also order them with the bobbin used for the neck which is HB-spaced.

My Crazy 8 is easily one of (if not the) my favorite pickups.
The more I'm using it the more I appreciate and like the Distortion but the Crazy 8 has this quality I can't really describe that I LOVE!

I REALLY wanna find a chance to try out the other PATBs (1 and 3 mostly as the Crazy 8 is plenty hot as it is) and experiment but around these parts you must buy new and you can't sell even for half-price...

Yes, this is 100% correct.

Yes, they were originally made to add beef to 25.5 scale trem equipped axes but, it is good for any kind where you want fatness and beef without the mushyness and looseness of an A2 magnet. PATB's are simply outstanding pickups in everyway. I have played nearly every Duncan bucker, lots of dimarzio's, Bill Lawrences, Laces's, etc, but, there is something extra special about PATB's.

Re: (FINALLY!!!) im a new PATB1 user!

...anyone know the technical difference between the PATB-1 and PATB-3?

Check out SD's PATB-1 and PATB-3 pages, as well as the Tone Chart for tech specs...in a very brief nutshell, the PATB-3 is more PAF'ish sounding, while the PATB-1 is its' own thing. Both use A5 mag's, the PATB-1 has more output and mids than the PATB-3.

None of the 3 production models are disappointing, IMHO.... :)

Re: (FINALLY!!!) im a new PATB1 user!

I have a bridge PATB1 in the bridge of my Les Paul. It dominates. Polepieces line right up. I ran it through a Dano EQ last night, bumped the mids, dropped the treble and bass and readjusted bass on the amp and it improved the sound even more... it really brought out a polished vocal-like quality that still screamed for rhythm.

Re: (FINALLY!!!) im a new PATB1 user!

I think the "fizz" is just an overall aggressiveness, kind of like the way highs get saturated when you OD an amp. Not exactly fizz, more like edge - just enough to be noticed, not too much to be overbearing IMO.
