so i got a PATB1, bridge model, this past xmas. thats right, xmas. there was a fault in it so that it wouldnt fit through a pickup ring (of any sort, including the one it came with) and after a month of hassles i finally have a new one, which i just put in my ltd viper-300 (mahogany/mahogany/rosewood). first thoughts....
if i had to describe this pickup in one word it would be: BALLS!!!
holy hell. definitely a unique sound, but i love it so far. very ballsy (you can take that as punchy, thick, and big yet tight low end). kinda makes me think of an invader without the muddy/undefined qualities. the low end is huge and thick, but surprisingly considering that very tight. no flubbiness that i can hear.
compared to the anderson H3 i replaced with it, the PATB1 is a lot thicker and a bit tighter, lacking the fuzziness/fizziness that the H3 had on the low end.
compared to other pickups, the thickness is the main advantage. yet it really stands out and doesnt sound like itd be lost in the mix. its got a bit more output that the H3, but not as aggressive as other duncans i own (JB, DD, invader). now i really dont wanna say theres a slight fizz to it cause that in theory would be bad (IMO). but it doesnt sound bad at all. adds to the more unique dimension. the cleans are pretty good. the H3 actually had my favorite cleans for a bridge humbucker, but its pretty good here too.
all this was judged through my XXX 2x12. through my PODxt, which tends to sound completely different, it sounds very similar to the H3 (a good thing, as it cooperated with the XT pretty well) but without the fuzz/fizz in the low end and the bit more output is noticable.
overall im very happy with the PATB1, well worth the wait. ill really crank things up and give another report tomorrow
ps- it looks f'ckin cool
now all i need is a p-rails in the neck
