Finally tested a Mesa 5:25 Express combo!!

Two thumbs up!!

I liked it a lot... excellent cleans - deep bass, clear mids, tight and snappy top. The overdrive channel sounded great on both modes - shared a lot of the same properties the clean channel had. The overdrive sound was full of rich 2nd order harmonics and was defined but had this really cool raunchy rock'n'roll edge.

The 10" speaker put out an astounding amount of bass and sound for such a small, 25w amp. The response on the amp was lightning-fast, too. The reverb was clean and satisfying. It didn't sound as good on 5W mode but it turns the amp into a neat little practice combo.

Nice little amp! If I had the $$ I'd probably pick one up. Definitely one of the coolest EL84 amps I've tried.

Have you tried the 5:50, if so how does it compare? I played the 5:50 a while back and came really close to buying that thing. I bought an orange instead tho, I just couldn't resist.

Loudest I had either channel on was 6 and it's definitely enough to keep up. An extension cab would be a good idea for more coverage but its definitely giggable on it's own.

I tried the 5:50 and didn't like it very much. The actual tone had that same responsive feel as the 5:25 but it was too loud and honky for me. The 5:25 had all these rich, delicious overtones that the 50 just didn't have. It sounded much better on the 5w mode, that evened things out a bit.
