Finally the Review: Custom Shop S-Deco-5 11.5k (B)

Re: Finally the Review: Custom Shop S-Deco-5 11.5k (B)

Basically it all started when I emailed MJ and asked for a hotter '59. She replied back saying a step up from the '59, using the same A5 magnet, was the Jimmy Page (just a little hotter, upper 8k?), then the S-Deco-5 10k, then the S-Deco-5 11.5k. She said with each step up it got hotter and thicker due to the overwinding and brought out more and more harmonics. I wouldn't say it's that much thicker, but more so than a stock '59 and less than a JB for sure.

One big difference between it and the '59 is the unbalanced coils. One coil is roughly .2k hotter, and like the Pearly Gates which is unbalanced too, it seems to add some top harmonics. I guess this could make it sound a bit brighter.

The best part about it IMO is that it's hot enough to keep the front end of my Mesa tight and punchy, yet cool enough to keep the cleans jangly and open.

I'd still love to hear the A2 version...

I need to figure out how much of this brittleness is actually caused by the acoustics of my basement. There are spots were it is just painful to hear and other spots where its absolutely stunning.

Very possible...

Where my amps are there is a couch, a big rug, and several other "sound absorbing" things. Whenever I play in the shop/garage with the guys where there is nothing like that around my tone definitely shifts towards the top end and gets a little brittle.
