Finaly i don't like the 59 neck

I tried the 59 neck in my roadstar with a Custom in bridge ( so good especially with allen head screws ! ) and after a few days i did changed it for a Jazz neck .
59 : good for santana kind of distorted lead but that's about it .
This p-u has too much bass , is too scooped and has not enough
pick attack for fast licks .
And it is too hot for nice clean , harsh highs and farty lows .
Jazz : Less hot , more pick attack , less scooped , brighter with less basses
much better for fast leads and clean .
And i tend to think that the Jazz is THE BEST neck humbucker ( In the same register it kill the dimarzio Humbucker From Hell ) :firedevil

Of alnico 5 neck pickups, I like the Jazz n better than the 59N too...and for the same reasons you describe. The Jazz n is clearer when I play chords and the 59n has a bit to much bass for me.

But not everyone agrees. Both are great pickups for everything from rock to jazz but it seems that guys who play with an overdriven rock rythym tone often find just the tone they're after when they use the 59n.

And Robben Ford used the 59n for along time. So obviously it works just fine for alot of players.

But I like a neck pickup with more clarity and less bass.

i like the 59n set pretty low. if its too close to the strings i think it looses definition on the low strings. in the right guitar it can be a great pup. a friend of mine has a les paul that used to be mine and every time i hear it, i lament selling it. its got a pair of 59's. and a great top :wizard:

The Jazz is a great pickup!!! It is my second favorite Duncan neck pickup behind the Pearly Gates!!!!!! I love the Pearly gates!!!!

I felt the same way about the Jazz and 59! Hate the 59 and dig the Jazz, but I prefer my pickups a bit hotter than what the Jazz puts out.

yes the Jazz is low ouput but in my guitar witch is accoustically so resonnant (thick basswood body) it drives the preamp just right , it sings like unbelievable .

This mod works wonders on both my 59 and my Distortion. I'm going to try to post a clip sometime this week. Just rolls-off a smidgen of the low end, and thus, the "mud".

I dont' like the '59 for the same reasons.

In every guitar I've ever put it in I can't deal with the overly-bassy mud. It doesn't even come close to the Classic '57 neck I have now...the '57 is much sweeter sounding and still creamy but without the boomy bottom end.


I'd be curious to see how an Alnico II Pro neck sounds compared to the '57 cause I know the '59 is just not for me.

I find the 59n too bassy in my Les Pauls. I haven't tried a Jazz, but I have tried the Seth Lover, Alnico II Pro and Antiquity neck models. They are all excellent!

My conclusion... if you're finding a neck pickup with an alnico V magnet a little too bassy and/or scooped, get one with an alnico II magnet. Especially one of the three listed above!

I too found the 59 too boomy in my LP. I love the PG that's in there now, and the Seth wqs pretty cool too.

Can someone compare the PGn to the Alnico II Pro neck to the '57 Classics??


Has anyone used all three of these? I've tried a few neck pickups and the '57 Classics get me closest to that Slash Appetite for Destruction neck sound he has....VERY clear but smooth and warm as well with a few single coil-like qualities in there too.

The Jazz in my RR is just so warm and deep, I love it, beautiful for finger picking classical like licks. Alot of versatility.
