Finding the perfect pick

Re: Finding the perfect pick

Dunlop Ultex 1.0 mm, and 0.73 mm when I can't find the 1.0's. I also occasionally use some sterling silver picks that were made in NM by Native American silversmiths. They provide a very nice and interesting tonal variation, but they aren't cheap so you don't wanna lose 'em.

Re: Finding the perfect pick

I'm using the yellow dunlop Tortex picks (.73 I believe). They give my Les more cut, going with thicker picks seems to make it sound hollow to me.

Re: Finding the perfect pick

I think I'm the only person left in the world that uses a Dunlop .60 tortex SHARKFIN pic- I always have to order them, 'cause no one stocks them- but I've been using them for like 15 years, and can't get comfortable with anything else.

Re: Finding the perfect pick

I switch between the Fender Clear California Mediums and the Yellow Dunlop Tortex.

Re: Finding the perfect pick

It depends. I always use Dunlop. Here's my picks:

A .38 Nylon Standard Pick box
A .50 Tortex Standard(Red) Pick box
And a 1.38 Nylon Jazz III(Sharp) Pick box

I use the thinnest for power chord stuff or acoustic. I use the .50's for pretty much everything, and I use the Jazz 3 for guitar solo's and lead riffs/work. I use them all depending on which I find first.

Re: Finding the perfect pick

I use the thinest Jim Dunlop pick I could find glued to cut down and modified National thumb pick. I got tired of droppin the d$%m pick! I find I can use it to switch instantly from flat to thumb, or finger picking.

Re: Finding the perfect pick

because of this thread, i went out and got a few different sized tortex to try for the first time

They sound so dead! How can all of you guys use them?

Everything is so much more defined with my Fender "Triangle" picks.... maybe the dunlop celluloid are better than the tortex, but i cant figure out thier large following.....

Re: Finding the perfect pick

I have tried lots of picks and always end up back with my Ibanez Steve Vai signature pics, their just perfect.

I dont mind 2mm Stubby pics either, i went through a phase of using those a lot not so long ago, but when i switched back to the Steve vai pics they suited me more.

Re: Finding the perfect pick

really? i personally only use tortex picks! ive tried nylons they were ok but a bit too flimsy for my taste. Ive tried celluid, cheap store brand plastic, and other random picks. I just love tortex, ive totally settled on the dunlop tortex .60 mm. They truly are the perfect pick for me.

Re: Finding the perfect pick

Tortex Jazz's for me so far, but I need to try out the Sharp Tortex's.

Re: Finding the perfect pick

I use the green dunlop tortex ones. I think they have turtles on 'em...they are around .80mm guage I think.

Re: Finding the perfect pick

i use mainly 4 different pleks, depending of the sound i want
to create.
Fender Heavy (those big trianlge tortoise) for rock/bluesrock.
Dunlop Jazz III (tiny red, quite heavy too) for soft leads.
Fender Medium or those orange tortex for full chord-parts on the
western guitar.

Re: Finding the perfect pick

For rock/metal I go the green tortex .88's. For faster black metal it's .60 nylons, cause you can get better flick with your wrist without getting tired! I usually carve something in the tortex's for better grip, and I know if someone is stealin my picks!

Re: Finding the perfect pick

I used to solely use the .88 green tortex picks untill i picked up a friends .88 dunlop nylon standard. Same thickness but such a different feel that i liked alot better.
Also used to use 2mm stubbies for some reason, even though that have absolutley no give in them, which i hate in electric guitar picks.

For Bass i use 2mm dunlops with the little thumb & finger grip hole on them.

I'm a greenie tortex man
Seems like everybody is, that's the kind they give you at the GC in va beach haha.

The "green ones" and the "blue ones" (gators or whatever)

Re: Finding the perfect pick

funny you guys also noticed that too! it seems the standard metal players pick is the green tortex! i know dime bag used to use those and im sure many otehrs do. I guess its got enough stiffness to solo well. Also maybe no one else notices but alot of punk or emo bands use the orange ones haha i just realized that recently, guess its easier for thier three power chord songs! :) lol
