Finding The Right Pickup . . .

Like most here, I've been searching for the "perfect" pickup for what seems like ages. I went through the whole Custom line and none of them were quite what I'm looking for. I've stuck with the CC because it was the closest. My Les Paul is unusually bright so the A2 mag tames that a bit. However, the thing I've noticed about the CC is that its a pretty narrow pickup (I can't think of how else to say it). There's a lot of mids and not much bass and treble essentially, but also, it kind of sounds like the whole sound is focused in just one tiny part of the tonal spectrum and thats it. I'm looking for something wider. Another thing I've noticed is that most single coil and P-90's seem to have a lot more tone and character than most humbuckers I've tried so maybe take that into consideration too. The only thing keeping from getting P-90's or a guitar with single coils is that they usually end up sounding too thin to my ears. I'm mostly worried about keeping the highs tamed. Based on people's descriptions, I was thinking of giving the Custom/59 hybrid a try but I don't know if I'm just completely barking up the wrong tree. Any suggestions?

There is no perfect pickup and our tastes change over time so what might strike us as perfect today may not be perfect tommorrow.

I love the CC but I agree with you about it too!

I'd try a Duncan Custom. It has thick mids (sort of like the CC) but it has more bass and treble than the CC. The treble is very ear friendly, IMO.

Right now, it's the "perfect" pickup for me and I have it in two of my favorite Strats.

For a while, I did actually go back to the Custom (it was the first pickup I put in my Les Paul) but in the end, it had a little too much distortion to it and the high end was a *little* too shrill with my set up. I forgot to mention but I was also thinking of something with maybe a little less output. Not quite sure if I'd want to go all the way down to something like a Seth but it might worth a try . . .

If you're thinking of going with single coils, I say go with the Phat Cats. P-90 soapbar that fits into a humbucker slot. It's got A2 mags, too. Sounds like it should be what you're looking for.

I would try a Rio Grande BBQ bucker. Its got plenty of bass, and its not wound quite as hot as the Custom, around 13.1k i think, and an Alnico 5 magnet to tame it a bit.
