Finger Tapping Primer

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
This thread is in response to the "How Do You Finger Tap" thread ...

I've posted some basic tapping patterns, in both slow and fast speeds. I stayed away from the more advanced stuff, and just concentrated in the more popular tapping phrases you would've heard in the 80's. I didn't get into tapping melodies at all, and I won't get into the actual techniques involved just yet.

There are 6 examples:

EX. 1: Dm Triplets, Slow and Fast (D String)
EX. 2: Dm Quadruplets, Slow and Fast (D String)
EX. 3: B Locrian Quadruplet Melody, Slow and Fast (B String)
EX. 4: Em Double Tapping with Pick Edge (High E String)
EX. 5: Em Tremolo Tapping, Slow and Fast, Fast with Pick Edge (High E)
EX. 6: Tapping Above the 24th Fret, Slow and Fast with Pick Edge (High E)

They are posted at http://twilightsongs2.tripod.com

Hope you find them educational!

I'll have to get to this tomorrow. I'm 56k at home. This is a serious weak point in my 80's hair metal playing skills and I appreciate the lesson. Thanx!

Re: Finger Tapping Primer

i'll check it when i get in but i can hardly pick tap apart from high up on the B or E string on my guitars since i have a high action

Re: Finger Tapping Primer

for some reason - number one is 1 minute long, but there isnt that much audio there :/

i'm downloading the rest now :)

Re: Finger Tapping Primer

i hope you dont take this too offensively but the playing on the 3rd one is kinda sloppy

Re: Finger Tapping Primer

All of the clips were exported @ 1 minute long, even tho the actual music is shorter. I tracked them really late at night, and didn't feel like editing the tracks; I did 2 takes at each example, so it's very much of 'what you see is what you get'.

Re: Finger Tapping Primer

I downloaded, gonna burn 'em and take 'em home for my personal scholarship.

Thanks for the quick lesson. A shred lesson from 3,000 miles away... how cool is that?

Re: Finger Tapping Primer

Anytime you leave a public example of your playing, you're open to criticism, of course.

I think what is important & noble about your examples, is that they were well though-out, and included both slow & fast examples, which actually *do* illustrate the concept of two handed hammer-ons.

However, I thought the higher-speed playing was sub-par. Your taps aren't articulate. You're not "micro-plucking" the strings on the 'fast' renditions the way that you are on the slower renditions, which are excellent. Which leads us to my next point of contention.......

The harsh reality is that the truly great tappers on this planet are articulating, or "micro-plucking" the strings with intense hammerons & pulloffs even at intense speeds.

I give you an "A" for effort, and an "A" for really thinking this out, however. Overall, you did a nice job.

And who knows....a month from now, you may be able to play the same high-speed clips with much greater articulation.

I hope you don't think I'm bagging on ya, man.

I thought I sounded bad-a** playing Eruption at album-speed when I was 17, and playing my right-hand taps with my arm floating above the bridge, while quickly fluttering against the frets.

The reality is that high-quality tapping requires an articulate, if not sometimes violent technique that is anything BUT "touch-and-go".

Unless one uses a mega-gain pickup through a mega-gain amp driven by a TubeScreamer (get a clue, Kurt), tapping with your pick isn't going to sound terribly great, although Lynch pulled it off on one or two quick and insignificant instances. He has terrible lead tone, anyway.

Re: Finger Tapping Primer

I agree with Majestic a bit. I myself am really critical of everything I play, and the way even single notes sound out is really important to me, so I spend lots of time trying different picking or fretting intensities when tapping. Having said that, it was by no means bad, TO. I would just suggest making sure that when you hammer-on or pull-off with your fret hand, do it HARD. Same with the taps with the picking hand.

Re: Finger Tapping Primer

Personally, I only take on board criticism from people I know and admire because they post their music. Anyone can be an armchair general or armchair guitar hero.

I've never known Nuntious to post anything malicious. He'll say it the way he sees it - which is as it should be.

I pulled him up last week for posting sloppy stuff - he didn't get upset - he agreed that it was below his usual standard.

All I say is, if you are going to offer criticism and then go on to say how it should be done - then post a clip. That's the only way we'll know if you know your stuff or are just 'talking the talk'.

That's my take on things.

Re: Finger Tapping Primer

I've posted some basic tapping patterns
He did not say anything about executing them in a perfect way, it was a small guide on how they sound, who cares if they are slightly sloppy sounding??
That was not the point of this one!
It was a quick tour through some patterns.....read what he writes instead going 80's anal on it all.

Re: Finger Tapping Primer

If I post something I know to be sloppy - I say so when I post it.

If I don't know it's sloppy - then I hope someone will point it out to me.

Both me and Nuntius post stuff that's sloppy - just a 'musical sketch' - but I'll usually say so.
