Re: fingers or a pick??

I use picks fingers, dimes... Usually when I play I have a pick in my mouth. I got from using my fingers to a pick. You can get that nice treble sound with the pick that your fingers don't get.

Re: fingers or a pick??

I learned to fingerpick to apply this tecnique to acoustic guitar. Mainly slide, most of the slide players that I have seen and admire are compentent fingerpickers. Not to say that you can't play slide with a Pick. It is more difficult to mute the unwanted notes with a pick in your hand (IMO). Bottom line is the more ways of picking you have at your fingertips (no pun intended) the more choices you have when attacking the strings.
When I play Electric guitar, I always play with a flat pick, but I do have a tendency to cup it in my middle finger, and pick with my thumb, index, and ring when I need to. The one tecnique that I have never seemed comfortable with is Fingerpicks. I find it awkward not being able to feel the strings under my fingers. If I could play alternate picking with my fingers I would not use a pick at all.

Re: fingers or a pick??

I also tend to strum alot now, and my finger picking sucks. I liek the sound of heavy strumming on acoustics.

Re: fingers or a pick??

95% pick. Once in a while I will use my fingers when I want a mellower sound.

Re: fingers or a pick??

Both. With pick, I anchor with two fingers but can release my second and third for hybrid picking. I also just chuck the pick and play with my fingers as well, though not much in my current gig.

I think I'm one of a certain group of players:

Those that have been exposed to Jeff Beck. Once you hear/see what he can do without a pick, you're doomed to messing around fingerstyle. I love the dynamic range of what bare fingers can produce, and also the fact that it acts as something of a speed-brake on my playing.

Re: fingers or a pick??

Holy Resurection ...

I tend to use my fingers more than picks as I have greater control and accuracy. Granted I can't get the same hard sound from them

Re: fingers or a pick??

i sound better with my own style of fingerpicking. im not that good with alternate picking and sweeps, yet. i use my thumb, index and middle. sometimes ill throw in a ring finger. when i try out someones guit, i pass on a pick when they hand me one. :burnout:

Re: fingers or a pick??

Wow posts from Lee are quoted here!

Usually pick but I love to play with my fingers... it feels great!

Re: fingers or a pick??

I mainly use the hybrid method (flatpick and fingers). A lot of times I'll use my thumbpick. I'd use my thumbpick exclusively but I can't get the attack point from it that I can with my flatpick...

Re: fingers or a pick??

I use both, pick and fingers. I use my fingers to pop/pinch/snap strings when soloing, pluck strings against picked, bent strings while soloing for the dissonant sound, and thump the bottom 3 or 4 strings with my middle finger for a staccato rhythm effect. I find myself with my pick in my mouth or cupped in my middle finger quite a bit for straight up fingerpicking as well. Something lovely about laying my fingertips across the strings... :)

Re: fingers or a pick??

i have been playing blues through my fuzz pedals with my fingers more and more, but i still use a pick most of the time
