Finish brought some trouble

I've never painted a guitar before, so I just thought I could give it a shot and painted mine. The thing is that when I was finished the neck didn't fit as well as the cover for the electronics cavity. Should I just sand the finish of the places where those parts should fit before applying the lacquer? If not what should I do?

I'm painting a few project guitars myself and I know what you mean. Don't be afraid to sand those areas you mentioned because they won't be visible to the eye anyway when they're covered. And if you want a showroom finish, consider some wet-sanding which can give you some really nice results if done properly. Then you can polish it off with some Meguiar's rubbing & polishing compound.

Thanks for the help! I'll start sanding it today. However it won't be so easy as they are very irregular surfaces but I'll do my best.

Just take your time...that's what I learned. In the past when I rushed things, it would take me twice as long because of some forced mistakes. You'll get the hang of it after a while. I learned from trial & error.:smack:

I'm not too sure what you mean? Are those string bushings for a string-thru body design?

Sorry, what I mean is that the neck is bolt-on and those bushings don't fit and so the screws won't have support or whatever those things provide.

i'm about to wet-sand (1200 to 2000) the finish on my guitar (multiple layers of tru-oil)

would finesse it 2 work as a polishing compound, cuz that's all that i have on hand

Use your soldering iron to carefully insert the bushings ,just place the bushings in the hole and gently press down until they slide in

Oh, I know what you mean...ok. It's sort of like this picture. I'm still not clear or not on whether you bought the bushings or are they stock? If anything, I would buy the right bushings or drill the hole slightly larger so that the bushings can fit. Can you provide pictures of exactly what you mean? It would be great help in understanding what you are trying to achieve.

Typically you would have taped off the neck pocket, as this should be perfect without paint/clear. Now you'll have to sand/file it down. Be careful....when sanding you tend to do this on an arc, so you'll need to make sure you take even amounts of finish off.

And you should be able to carefully re-drill the holes for the neck screw bushings.

The image I posted was just an example of the bushings. I have those but only four of them.
