my warmoth alder strat with a koa top has no finish. all i want is some sort of clear coat to protect the wood. i have some sort of polyurethane finish that i believe is used for furnature. i wold probably rub it on. is the polyurethane finish suitable?
Polyurethane takes forever to dry and during that time it is drying it collects dust.
I wouldn't use it.
Instead, I'd go to Stewart McDonald and purchase some spray cans of nitrocellulose lacquer sanding sealer for the intitial finish build up and then a can of actual lacquer for the final coat of nitro lacquer..
It dries fast and you can then wet sand it with 400 to 600 grit paper until it' smooth as a baby's bottem and then polish it up to whatever gloss you want with McGuires rubbing compounds and polish.
this is the first time i have ever tried to finish anything besides a porch swing. is this an easy job, and what are some problems that could arise that i cannot fix?
also, are thetre any good websites that anyone knows about that teach you about guitar finishing in detail, and if i did decide to get it done in a shop, how much on average might it cost?
the Guitar Reranch is a great resource. I just refinished a Fender Telecaster body and used their sray can Nitro.
The main thing is not to hurry. Spray the nitro on evenly and avoid runs. Once you are done spraying let the nitro dry (cure) for at least a week before wet sanding. This will let the finish harden and will allow you to sand out any orange peel and get the finish nice and smooth without problems with sand throughs.
PS- Buy one of those $2.00 trigger attachments for the spray can. It will save your finger a lot of grief.
