Finish shrinking on a Les Paul?

Re: Finish shrinking on a Les Paul?

Thats called checking, and is common with Nitro (and desirable). Extremes of temp will cause it in newer guitars

Re: Finish shrinking on a Les Paul?

A little surprised it's happening on a 2012...

Sent from my iPad using a bunch of electrons, copper, and probably some fiber optical cable

Re: Finish shrinking on a Les Paul?

^ Me too. Extreme temp changes perhaps?

Most newer "nitro" finishes have plasticizers in the to prevent checking. It's definitely less common than with 50s finishes.

Re: Finish shrinking on a Les Paul?

Thats what Im saying. seems AWEFUL soon for it to be happening, so makes me wonder if guitar has been subject to some extreme temp changes. I know it happens, but usually over many years.. This one is just a baby

Re: Finish shrinking on a Les Paul?

Maybe the wood isn't finished growing? The finish isn't shrinking, the guitar is getting larger.

Re: Finish shrinking on a Les Paul?

That doesn't look like finish checking, just the finish settling into the wood. That's pretty common with a thin Nitro Finish.

Re: Finish shrinking on a Les Paul?

I'm seeing the same thing on my EJ Strat...I can run my fingers over the lines and the finish isn't broken it just seems to be sinking into the wood and these lines are grain patterns. Not really that noticeable unless you hold it at an angle in the light.

I hope that's what it is. I don't want my finish coming off in chunks.
