Finished laquering my neck ( pics) Finally!!!!

so what do you guys think?

is it ok? it was my first attempt at this.

was a totally pain in the butt, but i think i would do it again cause i learned alot from it. like....lay the neck flat!! dont hang it. i got runs by hanging it.

i used an already tinted nitro gloss made here in greece and went to an automotive shop for them to put it in a can for me. cost 12 euro a can.

you think it came out too tinted?

Looks pretty nice man, congrats! I hung mine when I sprayed it and didn't have any problems with running, perhaps you were spraying a bit too thick? How many coats did you put on it?

i put maybe 5-6 coats on it i think. kinda lost count!

lot of cursing going on when i was doing it cause of the runs! LOL

i must of looked pretty funny when i was doing that!

i actually did a better job than a local guitar maker here that fixed an old neck of mine and then laquered it.

i got the runs cause i guess i thought i could speed things up and go for more passes! oooops!

Very nice, did you do it all in one day?

When I sprayed my neck, I did 3 coats a day (about 30 minutes drying time between each), then let it dry overnight, wetsand a bit, wipe it down with naptha, spray 3 more coats... I wound up with 9 coats on it over a few days. Then I just let it cure for about 10 days, sanded and buffed it, and it turned out great. I used a clear satin lacquer though.

it actually took me like 5 days so i guess that i did alot more coats.

it was pretty tough compared to doing a body.

taking the laquer off the frets was tougher than i thought.

did a fret level as well. i havent strung it up though to see if the fret level was good enough.

funny about that. i have an old ibanez than i do all my crazy experimental work on and awhile ago ( cause i have played the **** out of it) it was buzzing in a few places. i really need to get new frets but i did a fret level on it and it worked. not all that difficult at all actually. it fixed the buzzing well.

The taint is fine by me, a little bit different that what you usually see. Cool.

well once i find out the problem on why my guitar isnt grounded properly i will slap it all together and take pics again.

It looks very professional, and the tint looks just right. Really brings out the natural color of the wood. Good job.

I think the tint is just right....really nice job. I tried to do nitro when I refinished my strat body several years ago, and couldn't get it to turn out right....I was not patient enough.

yeap that is birdeye maple.

USACG neck. real good work done by those guys.
they went on easy with the birdeyes cause i said i wanted it unfinished. but then i changed my mind cause it started to get dirty when i was playing. too pretty to get all dirty.
i want to make a EVH style guitar though where the neck is unfinished.
i have an ibanez like that but the fingerboard is rosewood so it doesnt get dirty, but the back is a dream.

I´d have to see in person to say for sure, but looks like it turned out pretty nice...

Wrong lesson. WHat you SHOULD have learned is that you were spraying too thick....better to have to spray again to cover than to have to strip the whiole thing because of runs...


Esp. Nitro should be sprayed thin and dried long before applying the next coat, because nitro has to harden as much as possible before the next "barrier" is applied...... I wait a week minimum between coats, 2 is better, and don´t buff or sand until after at least the 3rd (when I want to try to set a new thinness record) or 4th (standard), and I try to avoid going past 6 coats (but I usually end up w / 5-7)

That´s the only thing I´m afraid of in this case, that the finish may be too soft in the long run...it may either "fog up" or become "gummy", in both cases you´ll probably wan´t to redo it in the long run...

That's exactly why I had to strip my refurbished Ibanez and start over on the finish. The first finish was flat, shiny, and beautiful, but I don't think I had enough days between dry times and that resulted in a very soft finish. It never fogged, but the print from T-shirts would leave indentations in the finish after playing seating.

Birdseye lacquers a bit darker than the hard or rock maple. I think the tint looks killer! Nice piece if timber!

What did you use to get the lacquer off the frets? I have a neat Lil' trick
for that...And it only cost a penny.

I just dress them and it chips off that way...But something tells me i know EXACTLY whiich trick you´re talking about, only cost cost me about half a cent to learn (one Pfennig, while there was still a German Mark :laugh2: )
