Re: Finished up that Epic draft I had going

Well damn, thanks guys! I have to say I didn't expect it to get such a warm response.

T4D - do you really think this stuff has potential as an instrumental act? I just may have to get in touch with Robb...

Re: Finished up that Epic draft I had going

well, i mentioned that because one of the things that struck me about it was it revealed your talent for thinking in terms of concepts that could translate as soundtrack, etc. ... also, coupled with a lyricist/vocalist, it could also break as an act all its own ... i was mostly noting that you got major skills that are only going to refine even further and creativity that is very likely boundless ... it also shows your discipline ... i mention robb 'cus he has done video game soundtrack, so he might be able to aim ya ... and if he could drop your demo in the right hands, who knows

best of luck

Hmm... that gives me an idea. I've always LOVED certain movie and TV soundtracks (Gladiator, Troy, Lord of the Rings, Lost, etc), and I've often been told that some of my themes and riffs remind people of movie soundtracks, but I've never really known how to get into that.

I think this may be my excuse pick up one of those USB guitars and start doing some non-guitar based pieces... strings, orchestral, horns, percussion... hmmm...

Re: Finished up that Epic draft I had going

Hey man, sounds great! It gets good ~2:00 and on. I like the fact that there is a melody in this tune. It kinda sounds like a heavier version of Maiden.

Honestly, if you ever get vocals on here you should stay away from growls. The music deserves better than that. If it had growls, I'd chuck it in the garbage can. JMHO.

I say go for it man. Your music is awesome period. Adding other instruments tot he mix(orchestral stuff etc) would sound amazing.

It's funny - I've never really listened to Maiden that heavily. I realize how influential and awesome they are, but I just never really got too into them.

My problem is that I can't decide what kind of vocals I'd want to go on top. I don't want a guy who sounds like Dickenson or Halford, as that wouldn't really fly with me, and it'd been done way too many times before. Straight growls would ruin it for people, but it's what I listen to the most.

I wouldn't mind some tasteful screaming - infact, that would probably work out best, when worked with a good clean singer. Devin Townsend vocals would probably work very, very well over this... what say you, good men?

Hey, you're the artist. You gotta go with what you like!

You know what they say about opinions...;)

Like U2 albums, right?

Have you heard Devin Townsends vocals though? Would that turn you off?

Re: Finished up that Epic draft I had going

Sorry, I have no idea who Devin Townsend is. I'm not too hip on the latest metal scene.

Re: Finished up that Epic draft I had going

Excellent work dude :),

I personally think thats your best work yet.
Keep it up, have you ever thought of trying to do a concept album and painting pictures using your music, or if you had a vocalist you could add to that with vocals and lyrics too.

As i said before.

Killer!

Wow dude, excellent stuff. Great overall mix, arrangement, playing, and songwriting. Seriously sick stuff man!

And I definitely agree, Dev's vocals would definitely kill on this track. I can hear a lot of those moments where he would gradually switch from clean to screaming in this track. Keep up the good work man.

Thanks a ton! I can hear it as well, looks like we've been listening to the same album, lately ;).

...kinda makes me want to get a pod, shhh...

Argh... if I could, I'd ALWAYS mic up the 5150. I plan on getting a laptop soon (that's my next big purchase. Everyone, if I ever say "oh I want this axe/amp/pedal" tell me "NO **** YOU AND BUY A LAPTOP LIKE YOU REALLY WANT!"), so I'll be able to mic it up super easily, mix at school, etc. Can't really stand the POD. It's good for demo's and off takes, but you really need some speakers moving and tubes glowing.

He's the brains behind Strapping Young Lad, and also has a solo band called the Devin Townsend Band.

You might know him as the vocalist on Vai's "Sex and Religion" album, though.

Daniel, didn't I tell you? I plan to release an album with the stuff I deem worthy that I create over the next year or so. There's a local studio I can track drums with, I'm going to have one of my old drummers who I've kept in touch with drum on it, and then record all the gats at my house, have my old bassist buddy lay some bass tracks down, or borrow one of his basses and do it myself, and then maybe try to find a vocalist.

Re: Finished up that Epic draft I had going

Man... it's like In Flames meets Winds almost. I like it a lot- and FYI I agree about singing as opposed to growls. Growl over something like this and it degenerates into standard melo-deth. Sing and it suddenly sounds incredibly unique.

Re: Finished up that Epic draft I had going

You've got a pretty killer right hand, that's for sure! Actually, the left sounds dead on too. There wasn't a single note out of place, I'm very impressed.

I like the whole feel of this song. It's just got a really cool drive to it. It needs a big ending, though. The sudden drop off at the end makes me wonder "what happened, did my speakers die?"

You make me realize how much practice I need.

Re: Finished up that Epic draft I had going

i really enjoyed the first riff sequency, and i think i can add a lead on the song. probably on the final repetition of the first riff. or in the 4th riff.

Re: Finished up that Epic draft I had going

Hahah much thanks guys!

Amir, I've come to agree. I need some sort of unique style of vocals on this - but a good mix of dirty, cleans, and inbetween, but done tastefully so it all fits *just* perfectly. In other words, I need Devin Townsend :laugh2:

Tom, I've tried to think of different ways I could end it... I have one in mind I think you'll like. I'll get to recording it... now LOL.

WFD, thanks for the offer, but I'd like to keep this as a strictly solo effort, and I don't think a solo would fit in that part of the song - it's supposed to have vocals there.

Re: Finished up that Epic draft I had going

sounds great as usual bro!! if your going to go the vocal route the only thing to do is to try EVERY style and type of singer you can and see what comes up. even try thing things you think would never work, just to see for sure. who knows something you never thought of may drop your jaw and may fit perfect.

keep up the good work!!!
