Finishing an SG

Empty Pockets

I have the opportunity to buy an 80/81 Gibson SG on the cheap...the catch is it has no finish and all the electronics are in a plastic bag. It's all good 'cuz I want a new project to work on...I just don't know how I'd start finishing a set-neck guitar. Are there any good sites besides Reranch, maybe something with pics of someone refinishing a gibson-style set-neck...? If not, what's a decent finish usually cost if done by professionals?

thanks guys.

Re: Finishing an SG

a good nitro finish isnt cheap at all. i dont think finishing a set neck is much different than a bolt on. lots of sanding, tack cloth, spray, repeat

Re: Finishing an SG

What kind of SG are we talking about?

Ever thought of going au naturel...maybe some tung or a nice thin poly (*gasp*..on a Gibson?) clear coat?

Re: Finishing an SG

i've always wanted to get a cheap used Sg and give it a gold finish so it would match a goldtop LP

Dude says it's an old Special but it has trapezoid inlays so i think it might be a Standard. And I HAVE been putting a lot of thought into a natural finish or maybe just a cool colored stain. plenty of time to think about it.

an 80/81 standard should have the small block inlays

Re: Finishing an SG

Someone had a custom painted SG. Real cool finish, it was quite a treat to look at.
