Firebird pickups

I recently got myself a pawn shop deal. One of my dream guitars. A firebird! (so what if it says Epiphone instead of Gibson? Lol it plays great)

Anyways. The guitar has humbuckers in it. I really wanted to try and do an Allen Collins like firebird, (with p90s and a mini humbucker) but I'm kinda lost as to what I would have to do to make that happen. Will mini hums and a p90 even fit in a humbucker channel without me having to do routing?

Also anyone got good recommendations for pickups that would fit a skynyrd style through a firebird?

Thanks

Firebird pickups

You can get adapter rings to fit mini humbuckers into a humbucker route. They look similar to regular mini humbucker rings but the outer dimension is the same as a regular humbucker ring. Should go straight in.
For example:

BTW I got an Epiphone firebird III, it's a pretty good copy of the 63 firebird although some might say the pickups are a bit hot - but it does have Bill Lawrence mini hums and sounds correct to me.

The reason I got it was to sound right playing this:

But to answer your question I only know the Bill Lawrence ones in mine, I like them, I think they sound authentic and I can get close to Johnny Winter's tone.

Re: Firebird pickups

Yeah I've seen those. I had been reading about those and soapbar p90s and then came across someone saying you'd have to cut some of the channel out to fit them. That's the biggest reason I was curious..

And thats nice.. I've always loved firebirds.. So excited to own one now...

I'll look into those pickups
Here's a pic of mine.. it's a studio (or a firebird II not sure) .. From Korea and has a custom shop logo on the back..

Re: Firebird pickups

You can totally get adapter rings to fit humbucker routes. You could also use a Phat Cat (P90 in humbucker case) for the P90 slot).
I think on at least one of his Firebirds, he was using a dogear P90, so that wouldn't quite work if you are going for the same look. I am not sure if the mini hum is an actual Firebird pickup or a real minihumbucker, though (those are different).

Re: Firebird pickups

if you want a set of firebird pups i cannot recommend the antiquity II firebird set enough, they are awesome for getting classic firebird tones. bright, cutting and sweet at the same time.

if youre open to keeping humbuckers in there, a set of seth lovers in that guitar would be sweet. a phat cat bridge would give you some of the p90 flavor but wont look like his. could be a cool combo though firebird neck/phat cat bridge. if you want to do the firebird neck/ real p90 bridge it might work with the dog ear pup but youd have to figure out a way to mount it

My mini hums are Bill Lawrence Firebird humbuckers. If you can track them down they sound fantastastic. But I heard samples of the antiquity ones mentioned above and they sound great.
The creamery and oil city do great firebird pickups too.

Re: Firebird pickups

I'm highly considering the Phat Cat in the bridge and a mini hum in the neck..

I have Seths in my LP and love em! .. I also have a 59 bridge just sitting around.. Wonder how that would sound in the neck? lol
