Hey all.
Finally out of university and actually have money to buy decent gear now. I don't even own an amp/guitar right now (just an acoustic) so I'm a bit rusty as to what to get - any help/suggestions at all very much appreciated!
Needs: Basically, I'm a rhythm player, play mostly Guns N' Roses/Nirvana/Alice In Chains/Also a bit of Drive-By Truckers. I'm basically just looking at an amp that can capture a really thick rhythm sound for covering these bands. Only used for small shows/screwing around in rehearsal rooms most likely so nothing too powerful. Ideally a 1 or 2-speaker combo as I have no means of transporting easily other than a taxi. Can be new or used, I am not too fussed.
Budget: £1200 for both guitar and amp. Might be able to push a bit further (not too much though).
Current ideas: JCM 800. There is a 1982 4210 50W 1x12 for sale at my local shop for £550 which is very tempting. Only other amp I've found which catches my ear is the 10W 1x10 Vox AC10C1 @ £450, which sounds really gorgeous, but I'm not 100% convinced it can capture the kind of GNR sound I am after.
Guitar: I'm not sure what guitar will go through it yet. Likely will throw my old Duncan Slash Alnico II pups in a H/S/H strat, or a Hagstrom Viking.
Examples of kind of sounds I'm after:
1) EDIT~ Come to think of it, the rhythm playing on Pretty Fly is very close to what I want:
2) This GNR show is pretty bad but you can hear Fortus's guitar playing very clearly for once (@ 52 seconds), that's fairly close to what I am after:
3) The chorus of this performance (@ 58 seconds) has a really fantastic overdrive, bit different to what I usually play but I wouldn't mind a sound like that:
Thanks again!
