First Guitar for a friend

I brought my 05' Squier Strat in to school for orchestra, and played at lunch with my friends.

Well I got one of my close friends hooked it seems. I taught her smoke on the water and bam!

So now we are window shopping for her first guitar, to buy after she uses a spare of mine for a month or two. She likes blue guitars from what we have seen so far, and loves the idea of a hollow body electric. Oh and She has small hands

She mostly likes Pop, Kpop, and other clean stuff. (I'm trying to slowly get her into Classic rock tho)

I was thinking like a Thinline or something. I would like to hear yalls input.

She would like to keep it ~$200

I can do the setup and such for her, so it doesn't need to to be a perfect setup out of the box

but for that price you could drop a JB in it and
like you said "You can set it up"

just strings and a hard tail
how difficult could it be
maybe a good nut and your off

heck comes with a crappy amp and cheesy bag

you may need to dress the frets a bit

Unfortunately the price limits your options, not a lot of hollow/semi-hollows in that price range, and if you find one color options might be limited. A used Squire Thinline Tele might be found for around $250

Haha yea, but I wasn't thinking a full fret dressing and $70 in pickups.

I'll tell her about it, but I have a feeling the thinline will win out

She might be able to max out around $300 if needed.

I know it's over budget but they do turn up used for less. THey're really light, and also these have the tiniest, "toothpick"-iest necks I think I've played on Squiers...I totally wanted one until I played it, and hated how dinky the neck was...

Awesome, but as you said a bit expensive.

Maybe one of those GFS/Xaviere guitars... $180-200 with GFS pickups stock

If both of you combined can afford the 400 price of the nice Squier Thinline you should go for it.
Comfort with hands, fingers and "the tone" will encourage her to play lots and to continue to practice.

Start on acoustic first. Electric is fun, but with acoustic you don't get distracted by all the knobs and pedals and you can focus on just learning the fundamentals. Used acoustics can be had for sub $100 all day long.

A Yamaha APX 500III has a thinner body and electric sized neck

Built in tuner

Comes in blue

Hollow

Just sayin

+1 to the Squier CV Thinline. I owned one. It's great out of the box, and down the road it's a good mod platform since all the parts are standard Tele.

OTOH, the Squier doesn't come in blue. Sometimes, the Xaviere Thinline at GFS does come in blue, but that color seems to be out of stock right now. More colors are available on the solidbody version, including surf and seafoam (okay, technically green, but close).

The double-bound variety costs a few bucks more, but is presently available in honest-to-God Sonic Blue.

That's what I thought on the , and it looks to be on spec on most all of the parts.

I put a Wilkinson compensated 3-saddle bridge, Duncan STL-1B Broadcaster and USA Fender neck pickup in my CV Thinline. It all screwed on easily with no cutting or drilling.

I'm not sure how the Xaviere guitars are on parts compatibility. Better than they used to be, I think, and they sure come in lots of cool colors...

Those are excellent beginner guitars and usually find those "used" (but barely used) on CL and such due to kiddos who want to learn but never did

EDIT: CL can be your friend here–cash is king and can knock some prices down for green paper in hand
