First in a long time...NGD X2

I have not purchased a guitar, amp, whatever, in quite awhile! But I just really got the bug to get one of those Epiphone Genesis guitars. Because of some miscommunications, I wound up getting two. Both are the original versions from 79-80. I just picked up the better of the two today. Its the cherry or wine red standard with dots inlays, no neck or headstock binding. Missing the backplate, but it plays really nice. Haven't amped it yet, but if I don't like what I hear, I'll change that. I guess I'm used to the Norlin era Les Pauls that I own, because this guitar doesn't feel heavy to me. I'll post some pics later. $300 with the case and no neck or jackplate repairs.

Next, I wound up winning this turd off of eBay, lol.

I only got this because I emailed the fellow with the wine red guitar (Craigslist), and he didn't get back to me by the time I saw the auction for this black one. I actually like headstock repaired guitars, as long as it is done right, I like guitars that are beat up as well, and for the price, I couldn't pass it up, so I bid. THEN the guy with the other one contacted me. Couldn't pass that one up either so, here I am with two after jonesing for one for thirty three years. I know that compared to the stuff that's come out since 79, these guitars are ugly, but I guess they remind me of myself, ha ha. Beat up and ugly. Love this wine one, and the drummer in my old band, who is quite the luthier, will refret the black one if I want. I'm a happy mofo, bros.

Congrats!!! Those are sweet guitars.

Thanks Dave. Played it for awhile with my Vox AD60VTX and H&K Triamp 4X12 and the bridge pickup sounded great. The neck in humbucker mode sounded fine, but split...eh. Gott toss a Jazz in there, huh? That's my pickup! I'll A/B it with My Les Pauls with the Brobucker and Super Distortion bridges sometime this week. Looking forward to that! As far as the feel, this thing has Les Paul written all over it. Great, great feel. Very surprised these guitars didn't blow up when they were released. I guess nobody could get past the looks, ha ha.

Hmm, that thread I started on the new MIK ones got quite a run. The originals were made in Taiwan with MIJ parts, like Gotoh made hardware and Maxon pups. There were three models - Standard, Deluxe, and Custom, distinguished by inlays and amount of binding.

For the money, it's a total no brainer.

It was basically your thread that juiced me up to get one. I saw something about the reissues and of course, came right here. I read through your thread and all the non-love for the guitar made me want it even more, lol. I had even bid on a reissue, but I lost that auction. I was going to keep all three for a little while and sell the two I liked the least. Probably a good think I lost that one though, ha ha.

Re: First in a long time...NGD X2

Most of the negative stuff was about the looks, since no one (I think) played one, typical guitarist response :D. Given the specs and the price tag, it seems like good value for $$. I think they look fine. If it sounds good and feels good, then it is good.

It would've been interesting to compare an original with these reissues.

Re: First in a long time...NGD X2

I think it's kinda cool looking, kinda Yamaha SBG looking.

...other than the casino headstock, lol.

Holy ****e! I got the black one today it smokes. I mean it plays great, doesn't look as bad as it does in pictures, and it sounds okay. What I can't get over is how easy it plays! It actually plays easier than my 75 Custom, and way easier than the red Genesis I just got as well. None of the buzzing mentioned in the ad, and the frets look like they have plenty of life too. Love this guitar and for the price? Wow. I feel like I FINALLY got my Gearjoneser deal, lol. It's been rewired to split both pickups with the mini toggle instead of just the neck and I like that. On this one, both pickups sound really good. You guys know me though, and I'm sure I'll be swapping pickups and magnets, lol.

Hey man, have been checking your songs, "Echoes from the Past" is a masterpiece! No joke, it could be on any Rush album. Don't know why you don't have a record deal!

That's very kind of you Filipe. I didn't think anybody would still dig a 27 year old song that was recorded so dry, lol. You made my day.

Re: First in a long time...NGD X2

On the black one, I'm thinking of putting a tone knob where the input jack is, and putting the input jack on the side, ala Les Paul style. Then I'd wire it up like a Les Paul, use the mini toggle as a phase switch, and do push pull on the tones...like most of my other guitars. Sound good, or would you just leave it? Thinking of doing this because one of the big problems with this guitar is where the input is, its only a really thin piece of wood and if you step on your cable...snap. Big ripped out hole in the front of your guitar.

Re: First in a long time...NGD X2

They look great.

Never a fan of front mounted jacks (unless it's on a plate like a Strat) for the reasons you state, so I'd give it a side one.

If the black one were mine, I'd strip the neck and give it an oil finish for that lovely raw feel.

As soon as I felt what the upper part of the neck felt like, the plan started taking shape. Whoever did the job really did a nice job on that neck, and I'd want to match how smooth it is. Really fast too.

:) I know advices aren't to be given, but it would be awesome if you re-recorded it with today's technology. Your voice is really amazing, and your guitar playing is like the shredders from the past (like lots of feeling mixed with technique)!
