Re: First mic

No, but it was a cool frosty white. I thought the name meant it was favored by Max Norman for those barn sessions.

Re: First mic

If you are just recording acoustic guitar, and only recording, get iRig acoustic- is a digital MEMS condenser mic that clips to your soundhole. If you want to use it to play live and record just acoustic guitar then go for iRig Acoustic Stage which is the mic plus preamp

Listen to the samples, they are amazing. I have the iRig Acoustic Stage and it's awesome

Re: First mic

I didn't read he whole thread. I'll be the first to tell you that I don't know jack about recording and don't care; when I do sessions I'm happy to go with whatever the engineer wants to mic me with. Truth is I love playing live and kinda hate recording. For live use I use and recommend the Sennheiser 609. When I'm mixing I bring a couple Sm57s in case somebody specifically requests one, but if not I'll use my 609s because they are MUCH more transparent then an SM57. The only advantage an SM57 has is that every soundman on the planet knows how to EQ one. But give me an 609 and a guitarist with good tone and I don't HAVE to EQ it.

The 906 is arguably a better mic, but I don't think you can hear the difference through a live PA.

Re: First mic

I suspect the SM57 is so popular because of its deviations from transparency. I'm sure at some point I'll want one or more mics that are relatively free of such colorations, euphonic though they may be.

You will probably want to look into Earthworks when you get to that point.

Actually, 57s are so widely used because they are fairly flat in the range that they do pickup. Their deficiency is a severe lack in the top and bottom end departments, but for the sound sources 57s are commonly used on, it's largely a non-issue.

Exactly. If your guitar amp isn't putting out 16hz, then why bother with a microphone that can't pickup 16hz? It just means that there's more chance for low frequency rumble.

Don't a lot of mixing engineers shelve everything under 60Hz anyway?

Re: First mic

Like playing through a Metal Zone into a closed-back bass amp?

Re: First mic

You'd be surprised some of the **** people bring o gigs...
I was friends with a band in high school that actually recorded an album using a boombox set underneath the drum kit with all the amps pointed at it. They actually sold it. Sure, it was punk, but still. LOL

I mixed a motorcycle rally a couple years back that was trying to do things on the cheap. The opening act was this originals band (instant epic fail for a bike rally) that wasn't used to even having a PA. the guitr player's rig was this horrid Zoom modeling pedal feeding a powered PA speaker. I talked him into forgoing the powered speaker and just going direct to house but ye gods...

Sure you can; they are voiced very differently.

+1000

If you really want the 609 sound, the 'bright' setting on the 906 comes pretty close. Personally I like how close the 'flat' setting comes to a 421.

I like to start a bit higher than that; maybe even 150hz. If the guitar's too thin, move the corner frequency down. If it's still to fat, go higher.

Re: First mic

Are some microphones made to sound artificially bass-heavy, the way some speakers and headphones are, in order to appeal to a certain kind of ear and garner sales?

Not that I can think of, but proximity effect can make many mics sound that way.
