First mod to lap steel...

Alright guys, most of you know I recently got a lap steel made by Mr. Frank Falbo and I love it but neither of us was really in love with the Jazzbass/Mustang knobs that ended up on it so I set out to find some cool knobs.

This is my first attempt...I dig the knobs overall but they are a tad smaller than I like...

Any thoughts good or bad???

Here is the thread about the steel that shows the original knobs...

Re: First mod to lap steel...

This is probably the one time in my life where I will say that wood knobs will look best.

I usually think wood knobs look weird, but somehow I think they'd work here.

Re: First mod to lap steel...

Interesting...I thought about wood knobs before the steel was ever done...it just sort of fit in my minds eye.

We'll see...the cream knobs look cooler in person than in pics but they are small and it's not as easy to work the controls as it was before and all looks aside it has to work right!

Re: First mod to lap steel...

Bakelite. Source a couple of classic old brown bakelite knobs from an old tube radio or search ebay or ask some old tech to let you rummage through his collection.

Re: First mod to lap steel...

I've got a few bakelite knobs but i'm not sold on brown knobs.

Hmm...more stuff think think about.

The rosewood or ebony dome knobs are sounding better all the time...

Re: First mod to lap steel...

I have a pair of ebony knobs in the shop but there are two reasons I didn't use them:

1. Because they're mine. :nana:
2. Because there's no ebony anywhere else on the guitar.

If they're wood I think it should be the Rosewood or at least a brown wood. I though I've seen snakewood knobs in the past but I couldn't find any in a search. I thought Allparts had them but they don't.

I agree...I didn't really mean ebony as much as I was just filling in different types of knobs on the wood knob page...

I'm just not sure about wooden knobs truth be told but maybe I'll order a set of those rosewood dome knobs and see how it strikes me once they are on!?

Re: First mod to lap steel...

I think something more modern, or timeless, looking would be better on that guitar. Flat-topped Tele dome knobs or black Gibson speed knobs, for example. The knobs that are on there look like they are trying too hard to be "retro," and it doesn't work with the figured maple IMO.

Re: First mod to lap steel...

You want something that isn't smooth so you can do volume swells and tone swells with your pinky while you play. My choice in color would be ebony.

Re: First mod to lap steel...

I'd get rosewood ones ! It would look cool as hell with that maple top (I assume) and the fretboard !
