First pc recording

Hey guys, take a listen to my first recording attempt. It's an intro for my sons football team (11 year olds). Basically its something to play while they take the field. Here's the basics-Cubase LE, Presonus Firepod, SM57, Peavey VTM 120 with a 7 band eq in front, BBE Sonic Maximizer, 4 guitar tracks, all dry but eq'd, DFH 2, I played bass also through the VTM. No compression on anything. Yes, the ending is repetative, they needed it that long. I could put some solos over it. Oh, the guitar-'83 Washburn V with a floyd and an Invader bridge, DSD neck. http://www.soundclick.com/mikebourque
Let me know what you think.

Re: First pc recording

I'm not much of a metalhead but it sounds very tight! I'd love to hear a blistering solo over the last minute of that song . . . I think that would really add to the interest of the whole piece. The drums sound decent, are they sampled?

Re: First pc recording

Good stuff man!! That VTM sounds great, I have mine dialed in to a more vintage sound, so it is cool to hear it raging like that.

Re: First pc recording

Thanks for the positive feedback, guys. The drums I actually played on a midi keyboard using Drumkit From Hell 2 software. No loops, I played it through the whole way and quantized it. Since it's a football intro, I didn't want to be self indulgent and blow solos all over it, but on second thought............This was my first serious attempt at recording and mixing-I wanted to keep it simple and build on my knowledge, I'm no engineer, thats for sure, but learning alot. Hey Kevin, I checked out your clips of your VTM as well, sounds killer!! The kids dig it, the parents dig it, the board members and coaches dig it, but the nerd president and v.p. of our football program hated it, said it was too heavy and wanted to "make a mix tape with AC/DC in with it". Ain't happenin'! thanks again for the replies, maybe my next clip will be of my Ibanez Iceman/JB-Jazz. Take care

Re: First pc recording

Im actually thinking about getting DFH2, you can program it with something like battery, or use vst in cubase right?

I like it though, guitars seem a bit grainy but i like.

Re: First pc recording

Nice mix!

try a limiter on the final to bring up the overall volume. Just don't cut into the dynamics.

Re: First pc recording

Yah, I know there's so much one can do, it's really endless. My problem is figuring out good starting points. I think that took me 30 minutes to record and 30 hours of messing with it! I'm still figuring out limiters, compressors, etc. Basically I put down 4 guitar tracks and eq'd each one a little different to fill things out a bit. Any and all mixing and mastering advice is welcome!

Re: First pc recording

Woah, that is awesome dude! Very nice job for a first time recording. Nice playing too.

Re: First pc recording

Thanks much for all the positive feedback. This is actually the first clip I've ever posted. I have other stuff from previous bands but it was all 4 track stuff and the quality isn't there. I'm gonna keep working and have some more clips soon.

Re: First pc recording

Thanks for the link, I browzed through it and there's a lot of good info there!I'll try to apply some of it next time.
