First post...first guitar?

Re: First post...first guitar?

Never heard Roland's modeling amps, didn't really like Vox's amps, I do like the Kustom's amps a lot though. Some models even use a (single) tube for the preamp!!!

Re: First post...first guitar?

roland cubes are very over rated in my opinion. they are expensive when compared to Vox VT+ series amps. The college I left a month ago was a sponsored 'Roland academy' and we had roland this, roland that... and when it came to amps, everytime i went straight to a marshall, put it that way....

Re: First post...first guitar?

I don't think the Roland Cubes can compete with the Vox VT+ amps honestly.
The thing is, you should be able to find a used Cube for very cheap I imagine?

A Roland Cube 30 and 60 are old models (should be cheap) that should more than get the job done for you, by now.
Eventually you'll move on, but I've had mine for almost 8 years (!) I think.
Not the best thing in the world, there's many tube amps now that might cost the same maybe,
but a Cube will get you started with some versatility and a few extra features added, for cheap.

with it being education.... you don't want exactly expensive gear anyway cause let's face it, the kids will still abuse it and have accidents.

I say squier for the guitars, vintage modified series are a big plus for me too (although i can only play them upside down cause they don't make lefties on that range) the HSS is a good idea as well.

in terms of amps, I don't quite know what to say. modellers are alright for the classroom situation but the problem you have is it is best to keep it simple for the students which can be a pain the rear if you have about 2 million knobs.... also with modelling amps, the kids can be distracted, ''ooh what does this button do'' syndrome starts taking over. so either go for about 50-100W solid state twin channel amps with say a reverb setting or go for slightly more expensive but smaller wattage (but just as loud!) tubes amps such as the HT-5.

the problem then with the tube amps is being sensible cause if you flick the on and standby switches together you could screw up the tubes.

but anyway, squiers are your best bet.

As to the kids, the "grant" guitars will be some acoustice Fender-whatevers. This guitar will be mine and mine only. I have my students trained quite well in regards to my stuff vs school stuff.

In regards to the trumpet, keep in mind that a well played brass instrument can fill a room with all the nuances etc too.

I've played with Daltrey, Spin Doctors, Eddie Vedder etc with my horn, it might be cool to work on it from another angle ;)

Re: First post...first guitar?

No, he doesn't. I do. ;)

BTW trumpet, I am in a similar situation. I primarily taught concert band for many years. I commend you for venturing into a new area, musically.

Likewise. Had a great gig, got sick, Uncle Sugar said "Ciao", so here I am. It's pretty cool though. For the first few years the kids were like :eek2: and didn't know what to think. Now, we (my wife works in the same school) have 'em trained well and they're kicking booty

Re: First post...first guitar?

I am going to agree with the consensus so far, go with the Squire Vintage Modified series with a humbucker in the bridge. These are pretty solid guitars for the money and will get you in the range of tones most of your favorite guitarists fall into with ease. Also, someone mentioned going for a low wattage tube amp instead of a modeling amp, I couldn't agree more, a tube amp makes a HUGE difference in having good sound you can really enjoy and with your ear... if you don't have one you're more then likely going to regret it...

Yeah. I'd actually like to highlight that I suggested the Roland Cube amps only on the basis that your budget is very limited.

If you can afford a low-wattage tube amp, definitely go for it and skip anything digital or modeling. You'll love it.

Re: First post...first guitar?

I say get a Gibson Les Paul Studio and a VOX Valvetronix amp.

Bang for buck sweet-spot on both.

If you want real bang for your buck, a very versitile guitar, good quality, great sounds, great playability, a kind of a combination of what has been recommended:

I own 2 dozen guitars, some very expensive Gibsons and Fenders, and this one (with Seymour Duncan pickups) is my #1 go to guitar.

At the price, you'll have money left over to put into a decent tube amp.
