first recording setup

super rad stuff

Skaforlifeologist
i was at guitar center last night, and the guy working there that i usually talk to was showing somebody this video of his recording setup. he's got his own makeshift studio and whatnot, and i asked him for a reccomendation on where to get started with recording. i don't remember too well what he told me, but i remember something along the lines of a kit consisting of 2 mics, one of them being a pencil mic and the other a condensor, a few other things, and it cost only $100. i don't care if it's high quality or anything, i just want to get started with recording and was wondering if anybody knows what i'm talking about. thanks!

Re: first recording setup

If you just want to get started from your bedroom, for a cheap price, I'd look at the Line 6 Toneport GX. These things are really cheap, but good quality.
No amps needed or mics or anything (unless you want to do vocals of course). Just plug in the guitar, or that ML bass, and find a sound you like with all the onboard amp sims and FX.

You'll still need a recording program of course, like Sonar or Cubase or that.

Re: first recording setup

thanks. i found the kit though, it's an mxl 990/991. it only comes with mics though! i'll look into the toneport then.

Re: first recording setup

Honestly, if I were looking into a home recording setup for the first time, or even as a small/mobile writing rig, I'd not hesitate at all to get a PODx3 and a condensor like an AT3035 or something similar. The PODx3 has a mic pre and acts as an interface, and the AT3035 is great for vocals/acoustics for the price.

i'd totally get that stuff if i had the bones;)

Re: first recording setup

Well what's your budget and what are you trying to accomplish?

really, i have no budget for the next couple of months, i've got about $300 left over from some savings i put away, and i was looking to maybe spend $100. however, if i've got to spend more than that i'll save doing this until after i've got some sort of income. i really want to get 2 things accomplished, learn about mic placement and get some basic guitar tracks recorded. nothing fancy, just want to do it as cheaply and as possible since i just want to learn how to record.

Re: first recording setup

Alright, now that that's down...

Any recording gear already? An interface, perhaps? Mics are useless without preamps, and the preamp on your soundcard doesn't count!

Re: first recording setup

:eyecrazy: i don't have any of that stuff.... looks like i won't be recording for a while! well, thanks for the help dood but i think i'll reserve this project intil after i get a job:D

Trust me man, Jobs just take time away from playing. Wait a minute, with a job, I am able to buy more s**t, On second thought, nevermind.

Re: first recording setup

wow toneports are that cheap:eyecrazy: i'll have to look into those then, thanks diocletian. however, i'm not too ebay savvy and i've heard horror stories about both it and paypal. i think i'll stick to non-paypal methods of getting one:D

Re: first recording setup

ah it's doing awesome! haven't really had the chance to plug into my main amp for the last month or so, but even through my kustom 10w practice amp through my pedals, it rips! to me, it's the other perfect guitar*. it doesn't have too much low end, nor are the highs piercing since i lowered all my screws in. it'd fit into a mix very well:D
how long 'til you finish your mahogcaster?:naughty:

*the only thing that'd make it more 'perfect' is if i did it to a washburn idol or similar with a maple top and thicker body!

Need to get a neck and some tuners and hardware. Maybe a month or so.
I keep finding other stuff I dont need, so that keeps putting it back.
Got a tb 14 for it, but put that and a jazz in my peavey for now.So now I also need pickups.. again! Maybe have to pull the trigger on a p-rails set, Or, a a-8 tb-14 and a p-rails neck.
