First time Poster. Also first Active Pups.

Re: First time Poster. Also first Active Pups.

Success! I put the varitone in with caps ranging from .05 to .150 and the effect is awesome. Really gives a lot more control to the vol pot under different conditions, and drops some of the extended highs of the EMGs for more bluesey sound, without having to dip into the tone pot and losing some clarity.

I didn't install the choke yet because I need to get a 25K PUSH/PULL to switch it on. I just don't think I would want the effect all the time.

Great mod if you have some EMGs and want to tame them or just want more effective tone control.

Err, Edit: I meant tone pot. lol

Re: First time Poster. Also first Active Pups.

I don't think Kirk ever used an 85. I know he uses an 81 in the neck of a lot of his guitars with the 60 in some of them to mach Hetfield's clean tone. the 57 and 66 would be appropriate models to switch to for Skynard.

Thanks. Have you compared the 57/66 to the Livewire Classic II?

Also, are the LWC2s out of production? I can't find them for sale new anywhere.

I had an 85 in the bridge of a Strat once...I think it would just be sloppy in the Neck position.

To be honest, if someone told me they wanted Skynyrd tones, EMGs would not be my first suggestion. However, I'm sure it can be done and some guys would be satisfied but whether or not they meet your expectation is something different. I hope it works out for you!

Yea. The Futura came stock with the 85 in the neck, and sloppy is an excellent description. Sounds much better in the bridge. Same goes for the 81 in the neck. Right now I can get some excellent tones, especially with the varitone. I think I'll still try out some other actives before I ditch them for passives. They are AWESOME distorted, of course.

Re: First time Poster. Also first Active Pups.

I won an eBay auction for a set of EMG 57/66 pups for $157 shipped!. Really looking forward to trying them out. Read great reviews, and have heard some great examples of how they sound. Can't wait!

This is a lot of trouble to do something an A2P wakes up able to do….

I'm enjoying playing with active pups for the first time. A different experience for sure, and I love to experiment. I could probably sell the 81/85s for about half what the 57/66 cost. So really, not a big expense. Plus, when I do want to make some crunching noise, it is nice to have the actives for that. Not that I do a lot of that.

Re: First time Poster. Also first Active Pups.

That's a good price for the 57/66 set. I'll be curious to hear your review.

Re: First time Poster. Also first Active Pups.

The 57/66 are in and I am loving them! Day and night better than the 81/85, for me anyway. Far more clarity and string definition. Great tone. With the vol turned down the slightest, they really sound pretty sweet and clean up nicely. Much less "sterile" than the other EMGs. I am certainly happy. And I'll be selling the 81/85s.

I just tried the 57 last night for about 20 minutes. I was very surprised how much more output it has over the 81X. It is also very dynamic and the it seems to be brighter and have less bass than the 81X.
