First time Wiring went great , except...

Does this diagram look like it should work..2 new pups in an Epi LP.. 2Hums/1tone/1volume /3way toggle.
Ive tried changing the cap (.022) 2 times and still no luck, so must be another problem. This is my first attempt at modding a guitar...the new pickups do sound great though...so much better than the stock ones. Any ideas would be much appreciated. I'm sure this is a common newbie question...my wife thinks I have too much time on hand once I retired, but this really is enjoyable :)...I still have my trusty Tele in the meantime. Thanks for any feedback you can give on this.

I've rechecked for bad solder joints,or shorts, but all looks fine.
GFS Alnicos 2 and 5...new tone and volume pots.

The volume control isn't wired correctly.

The output from the switch needs to go to the outside lug of the volume control and the middle lug goes to the jack.

Your guitar will then have '50s wiring. For modern wiring connect the cap to the outside lug of the volume control where the output from the switch should be connected. Google can help you learn about the difference between '50s and modern wiring if you don't already know.

How is this an LP if it only has one volume and one tone control?

In that diagram the tone control is wired in a different order with the tone pot coming from the volume first, followed by the cap that is then connected to ground. You will get the exact same result either way.

Also, so long as you use the two correct lugs on the tone pot and it is wired in series with the cap between the volume control and ground, which lug goes first doesn't matter.

Neither the tone nor the volume control are wired correctly.

The output from the switch needs to go to the outside lug of the volume control and the middle lug goes to the jack.

The tone control is backwards. The lug that you have soldered to the back needs to remain floating and the one currently floating needs to be connected to ground instead.

Your guitar will then have '50s wiring. For modern wiring connect the cap to the outside lug of the volume control where the output from the switch should be connected. Google can help you learn about the difference between '50s and modern wiring if you don't already know.

Thanks Gregory...I'll redo the setup tonight. I was trying for the 50's wiring setup. BTW, this is an Epiphone Vintage style Lp...they run around 220$ in these parts....Epi.jpg
...not a bad rig, except for the electrics.

Ah, cool. So it's like a Les Paul Jr. or does it have a thicker body?

With that headstock I could add some corners to make it look like the Gibson open book design. I've been wanting to stuff a Floyd in an LP for a long time but don't want to spend the $$$ and have always had an issue with the look (and stigma) of the Epiphone head stock (yeah, I know, I'm one of those guys, lol). Seems a little sculpting could be done around the neck joint for easier access as well. If the neck is more of a 50s style, a little contouring could be in order.

Alas, I just bought a pair of nice quilt top SZ520s for my hybrid projects, so I need another guitar like I need a hole in the head, but the prospect of a Floyded* "LP" is hard to resist.

Gregory...one last question ( just to be sure)..Am about to rewire according to your advice...does the centre lug on the tone still attach to the centre lug on the volume, with the cap (.022) still in line between ?
( as per the sketch). Thanks again.

Re: First time Wiring went great , except...

Make sure the switch is grounded, too, as in the SD diagram.

Yes, that will be just fine.

I was completely wrong about which lug needs to be soldered to the back of the tone pot earlier. What you have in your diagram is correct. Sorry about that!

Ugh... don't. If your going to go that route try to find one of those Kahler trems that retro fitted to the tunomatic with out routing, or just pick up a $200 chibson, and save your self half the work.

Re: First time Wiring went great , except...

It would be for the fun of it, really. I'm definitely not a Kahler fan. I thought they needed a little bit of routing as well; at least the one that I'm familiar with.

Ideally the switch (and anything else) should not have multiple paths to ground in order to avoid ground loops.

Do SD diagrams with bade switches show them wired to ground?

Bob@Montreal,

I was wrong about the tone pot before and have since amended my posts. What you have in your diagram for the tone pot is correct!

The only excuse I can offer for my ineptness is that I'm used to seeing the connections of the two pots facing one another like in the diagram provided by Allbutromeo.
