First-timer's Aftermarket Humbuckers

Hi everyone, I am thinking of changing out my stock pickups on my 2012 Gibson Les Paul Studio 50's Tribute but as the title says, it's my first time :nervous: and I am trying to decide if the 59's set is for me.

I believe the stock pickups are Gibson's 490R/498T. So far I've been rather okay with the neck but not the bridge pickup. Leads and rhythm on the bridge just sound off, with a weird honk to it. The neck sounds nice playing lead, but can be muffled for rhythm. I am looking to get versatile tones from the guitar as I am still learning, but not lose the classic Les Paul sound.

The problem is, I have not tried any other pickups before so I find it hard to relate to the terms used in reviews and fora that describe the sounds. However it seems that the 59's are a a set of no-nonsense, classic aftermarket pickups which make it a good starting point.

Do you guys agree?

Re: First-timer's Aftermarket Humbuckers

The '59s sound great in most Les Pauls, and are a great starting point for the world of aftermarket pickup swapping. They have big lows and highs to my ears, and if you don't like mids, they are scooped. I think they are an improvement over the pickups you have in there. If you give an idea of what style you play or what amp you use (and what sound you are after), we can suggest other pickups to research as well.
