First trip ever to Luthier

Re: First trip ever to Luthier

I hate stories like this, too. Maybe he has never been held accountable for his work. Maybe the people who bring their guitars to him know a lot less about guitar (and are quite happy with bad jobs) because they don't know any better. I appreciate updates on how this progresses.

Re: First trip ever to Luthier

Well i am still waiting to get the guitar back. When the guitar initially went in, it was discussed why it had high frets to start with. He had suspected that it had something under the offending frets. He even tried a fretting hammer to knock down one of the frets. He was going to look at them on the 1st run through. Now he is saying that the glue must of loosened up while leveling and/or crowning/polish. Causing them to pop up.

Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure that the high frets now on the guitar are the same ones that it went in with the 1st time.

Wow, I'm not so sure that I would ever take one of my guitars to this tech!

He's got one excuse after another for his incompetence.

Re: First trip ever to Luthier

This almost proves the old adage "When you want something done right, you (learn to) do it yourself.
In the meantime, if the person who did the job doesn't make it right, plaster their name across the internet.

Re: First trip ever to Luthier

I just my guitar back from a guy few days ago. He said full set up, blah blah. Bone nut too. Well the D string was sticking so bad, I had to fix it. I mean like 6 plings per tuning. Then I just fixed the intonation as well. Face it, guy assumes as a newer player I cant tell the difference. No biggie, I will find someone else. I swear its like everytime I take my guitar to somebody, I wind up having to fix something. People just dont care anymore I guess. The thing is, I even tip the guy. I dont mind supporting small business. I aint rich, I just want what I pay for. Is that too much to ask ?

Re: First trip ever to Luthier

How in the heck does a D string get bound in a nut? The only strings that should even be in a “slot” are the unwounds and even then a shallow one.

Can you post a pic of the nut?

Re: First trip ever to Luthier

The nut is the one thing I dont try to do myself. I dont have the tools, or the experience. I just took an A sting and filed away. Im telling ya, the most plinging I ever heard, EVER.

Re: First trip ever to Luthier

The plinging stopped. Intonation is much better. This guy has the Alt8/Demon set.

Dont wanna hijack this tread, but had to have somebody with way more knowledge look

Re: First trip ever to Luthier

D and G strings are tricky on Les Pauls because of the angle. The slot has to be both angled and gradually larger at the exit to prevent binding.

The one thing that many techs lose sight off is the slot only need be deep enough to keep the string in place. So think "notch" over "slot."

The tell tells pinging is more a sign the slot is too deep that too small.

How I do mine

When I was filing away, was trying to open up the back for"relief". It seems fine now, but I should never had to fix a pros work

Not Hijacked at all. Have at r.

I collected the guitar for the luthier. He spent a great deal of time correcting the problems with the guitar.
It now has pretty low action, I'd guess it to be around 3/64" on the low E, without measuring. He ended up having to remove, clean the slots and reset at least half doz loose frets. He might of even done a very mild re-leveling of the frets. The guitar plays extremely well now. N.C. for all that extra work. Not that he charged me a lot to begin with. I'm quite sure it would of added greatly to the cost of work completed earlier. Yet again very nice finish on the work. i'm very happy pleased with the condition of the guitar now. It is very obvious just how straight the neck is now. I'm tempted to say he bent over backwards solve the problems. Strange as it might sound; seeing the finished work; He stood behind his work and i would have to recommend him.

Re: First trip ever to Luthier

I saw a "pro" video last week on YouTube
Where that pro claimed the slot should be a flat shelf

There are all kinds of pros

Some just full of nonsense
