First tube amp

Am I Kvlt Yet?

Hi guys,
I think I need a tube amp in my life. I need a Fenderish, bell like clean tone (David Gilmour Straty sound in general), but I also need a bone crushing hi gain tone (Metallica, Rammstein, Gojira), but I think I'll need a pedal for this. It should also work well with pedals and be nice at bedroom levels, but it should be loud enough for a small club. My price range is about 700-800 dollars max. Please keep in mind I'm looking for a decent amp for the price

I was thinking about a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe or a Peavey Classic 212 or Classic 50 4x10.

Re: First tube amp

I would suggest looking at a Blackstar HT40 or if you're not too hung up valves try Blackstars new SS offerings such as the ID:60.

Re: First tube amp

Hot Rod DeLuxe gets my vote . . . through and through !

Just add a GOOD pedal for that Mesa Boogie driven Rammstein type of tones . . . imho.

Re: First tube amp

I know. That's my biggest pain - a need for tones from clean as hell Pink Floyd tones through Hendrixish Straty overdrive to those in your face Mesa like sounds. I think I'll get one of those Mesa/Boogie hi-gain stompboxes and a friend of mine will make me a Ram's Head clone soon :D

Honestly I think that's a good plan. Amps and pedals these days are great. You can get a nice clean crunch amp, and hit it with an OD or distortion box to get a solid gain sound.

Re: First tube amp

The Peavey Classics are great amps
You'll have a hard time getting a bad tone from one

Re: First tube amp

Randall RM50 with the Blackface module, and maybe the Treadplate module, would fit the bill price and all.

Carvin. I like the Vintage 50-style amp, like the Nomad and Bel-Air for a Fenderish thick clean, although the gain channel is reported to suck before mods. The V3m is very hi gain with a frosty clean. The Legacy is Steve Vai's baby, so listen to Vai to figure out what it sounds like. The x100b is a throwback monster with good cleans and a vintage-high gain, less than Mesa but more than JCM800. MTS series is a Marshall-style amp with the same gain problems as the Vintage, but it's easily modded. They're cheap from the factory and cheaper used; lots of people buy them as backup amps and sell later when they get upgrade and their previous main goes to backup status. The bridesmaid of amps.

Re: First tube amp

I just got my classic 50 and I can not recommend it enough, the crunch and clean tones are great, plus it takes pedals very well. Not sure about the stock speakers though.

Re: First tube amp

David Gilmour......clean??????????????? Maybe to a fan of metal, but that infinite sustain doesn't come from 'clean'.

Good Call on the X100B !!!

Re: First tube amp

The Peavey Classic 50 is a great amp! It does clean, gain, and takes pedals well. The JCM2000 DSL would be a good choice too. I also really liked my Rocktron Vendetta tube head. It covered so much ground and was built very well. That particular amp was designed by Bruce Egnater and it totally delivers on tone! A Laney VH100R might be worth looking at too; great cleans and awesome gain channel!

Re: First tube amp

Super Sonic 22, or one of the new Silverface 68 Deluxe Reverb Reissues + Pedals.

If you can find a good deal on one, a Mesa Express 5:25 or 5:25+ would also fit the bill without the need for a dirt box.

Re: First tube amp

I also want to add something a little crazy;
I went to a high school recital of led Zeppelin songs and they had a mesa .50, a line 6 thing, a fender hot rod, and another amp that sounded better, projected better, and crunched better than the others.....an Orange mini terror thru an orange 2x12. Not the tiny, the mini. It sounded sooooo good. The rest just could not find traction on that stage.

off u see did MRSAge, I m on tapa talk and auto correct is hating on me

Re: First tube amp

That has to be, at least in part, operator error. I know the TT's are good, but the Mesa .50 should have at least been able to hang with it.
