five/two good or bad pup?

I was thinking about putting a single coil in the middle of my G&L Tribute with the P-90's, and thought about trying the five/two. I thought it might give it a warmer sound when blending it with the neck or bridge seeing as it has alnico mags and the P-90's are ceramics.

I was thinking about getting a set of 5/2's for my strat but ended up sticking with the APS's. In theory the 5/2 makes great sense and the soundclips sound good to me. I'd get a rw/rp wher it would cancel the P90's hum when blended. It's all a matter of preference. So do you have Duncans for the P90's too? I've got a set of customs (ceramic mags) very nice and aggressive too, yet warm.

It's a "good" pickup. Not a "bad" pickup. Duncan doesn't make any "bad" pickups. Whether it's right for you is another thing altogther! That's what the 21 day exchange is "good" for...cuz you'll never know unless you try it. :) Lew

Okay Lew, what doesn't it have that doesn't make it exceptional? IYHO

Re: five/two good or bad pup?

i've got mine in the middle pos on a strat, it sounds very clear and 'twangy' - theyre designed for country music styles, in the same way a les paul is a jazz guitar heh

good pickup, i feel. not too powerful as to lose definition, but hot enough to give a good tube amp some stick. it's got a nice strummy rhythm sound in there thats my fave atm..

Re: five/two good or bad pup?

I think that part of what Lew is saying is, you can do all the research you can, but eventually, you just need to try something out. ;)

A good example is the two Peavey's in my sig. The Predator and Patriot are the same guitar, except that the Predator has a Kahler Flyer tremolo and locking nut. The two 59's sounded killer in the Predator. I just lifted the whole pickgaurd assembly out, and put it in the Patriot. The bridge 59 is virtually unusable in that guitar because of excessive shrillness.

One of SD's best pups - is "bad" in that guitar. The difference a tremolo makes. ;)

(btw - as you can see, I haven't gotten around to changing it back yet.)

Re: five/two good or bad pup?

i have heard good things and bad things about these pickups, though i know in the right guitar they will sound great. hopefully you have one of the guitars that will make it sound great.

okay my next problem i have found with this is, are the p90s like a set, one bridge and one neck p90? if so then one of them is already reverse wound, you could get duncan to rewind one of them or you could live with the hum in the position you use the least. I am kinda lost here though, i didn't know that g&l made a tribute with p90's or if that guitar was made to have a standard strat sized pickup in the middle. if this guitar is supposed to have a pickup in the middle then disregard this whole thing.

It's designed to retain the deep bass and bright twang of alnico 5 on the three wound strings and to have more mids and smoother treble on the three unwound strings. People who love it say it does just what they have always wished for from a single coil. People who don't love it find that the three alnico 2 poles under the treble strings lack the bright snappy sparkle of an alnico 5 pickup...but that is exactly what the three alnico 2 poles are designed to do! :smack: Lew

I'm cool with that. I was just curious why he didn't have strong feelings about it the way he would Antiquity surfers. I put it in a guitar that had a boomy bottom and a way too bright top. It worked out great (I play blues/blues Rock).

Re: five/two good or bad pup?

My P-90's are stock, they are the Magnetic Field Design [ MFD] Soapbar pickups that G&L had fullerton make. Yes, they are a matched set, but they are suposed to be hum canceling on their own because of the way they are wound in some kind of reverse winding that I never did understand how they did it. http://www.guitarsbyleo.com/faq.php3

They give a little bit of info on the pups right here. I have thought about trying a different pup in the bridge because my neck over powers it in the middle position, but Rio Grande is the only company that has direct replacements for it. I thought about haveing it rewound with some alnico 2 or 5's in it. Maybe that might be good option to check.
