Fixing (Making) Cables?

I was cleaning my closet and I have noticed that I have more than 15 old guitar cables lying around. I am not sure why I never dumped them. Jacks are all unusable. So it got me thing.. why not try and fix them. I can solder, i have the tools. Right? Watched myself couple utube tutorials and I am convinced that I can do this.

Do any of you fix or make your own cables? any tips or tricks you can share? Where do you buy your jacks and cables from? (good price, good quality..etc)

Re: Fixing (Making) Cables?

I recently bequeathed my assortment of mismatched old-but-still-working cables to my son. Being the anti-boutique guy I am, I made my self a double set of nice cables using Proco's heavy-duty bulk cable and Neutrik plugs.

Cable: Proco120SX
Straight Plug: Neutrik NP2X
Right-angle Plug: Neutrik NP2RX

All available from Parts Express. Highly recommended.

Re: Fixing (Making) Cables?

Mogami wire and Neutrik plugs (not "jacks"...jacks are the part that the plug goes into, like on a guitar or amp) work great for me.

Re: Fixing (Making) Cables?

Making cables like that really is cake. I've even made up patch cables, power cables (yes, power cables!) and tons of XLR stuff for a good friend of mine.

I had contemplated making a side business of it, but the business just wasn't consistent.

Nevertheless, here's a few places where I've shopped, all of have been good places:

Neutrik jacks = www.mouser.com

Heat shrink and jacketing = www.cableorganizer.com

Cable = www.rawcable.com

If you want Mogami cable, Redco Audio (www.redco.com) is supposed to be a good place (and they're local to me), but I'm a bigger fan of Belden's stuff; ymmv.

I'm also of the mindset that Neutrik kicks all kinds of ass. I love the fit of their connectors and their strain relief is unmatched. The competitors, like G&H for instance, don't feel as good to me.

I never figured it out. I can solder fine, but i always mess up some part of the process.

Re: Fixing (Making) Cables?

Solder in a ventilated area.

Wear eye protection because you will splatter the stuff eventually.

I've fixed and made several instrument, speaker, and mic cables. Tin your wire and iron tip and you'll be fine.

Redco is a great place to buy cable and connectors.

This is my favorite...a bit pricey but it's the best.

It works perfectly. You can plug/unplug it in your guitar or amp while the volume is up and amp on, without a sound. All of the Neutric connetors are tops and easy to assemble.
