Flat EQ

A fairly basic question for the more intelligent members out there - if I'm looking at an amp with a three band EQ (Treble, Mids, and Bass) which is a better setting for a flat EQ: 5-5-5 or 10-10-10? (ignoring for the sake of argument any tonal effects of the speaker)

Re: Flat EQ

better is subjective, and it varies between amps. Both are "flat" eq'ed. I think you have to go with what just sounds better to you.

Re: Flat EQ

I've always used a 5-5-5 for flat. Its balanced. having your EQ at max seems to wreck the tone in my opinion.

Same here. But its always good to experiment to see what you can get.

Re: Flat EQ

which on many amps will get you no sound :)

ive read that on a marshall mids on 10, treble on 0 and bass on 2 gives as flat a frequency responce as you can get.
although when i say eq set flat, i mean 5/5/5

Re: Flat EQ

A Fender style circuit is reductive in nature. The tone knobs are passive. So all on 10 would be "wide open" but also considered flat by some respects, because it's not reducing anything. Active EQ on most amps is off at 12:00 whether that's called 5, or 0 with - to the left and + to the right.

Re: Flat EQ

Really depends upon the amp... for example; an amp like a JSX or XXX with active controls set to 2.5 accross the EQ would be like setting it all to 5 on a passive eq'd amp.
