Flat stagger for Texas Hot?

If I custom-order a flat stagger for a single-coil pickup that is only listed as having vintage-staggered polepieces, how much would that cost and will that nullify the 21-Day Exchange policy (since it is a Custom Order)? The Antiquity Texas Hot single-coils seem to be what I want, but I don't want a vintage stagger or the aged appearance. I want the tone of the Texas Hot, but not the look. I hope that's not too sacrilegious... :)

Thanks for any info.

Re: Flat stagger for Texas Hot?

If you want the tone of the TX hot but not the look, go for the APS-2's. Both use A@ mags and are wound to vintage specs, but the APS-2's arent staggerd nor do they go through the Dun-Aging process.

Re: Flat stagger for Texas Hot?

Thanks for the reply, beandip.

Right now, the APS-2 is my first choice, but I'm thinking it not be "vintage" enough. That's why I think the Texas Hot might be better. If I only played blues and jazz, I'd get the APS-2 in a heartbeat, but since I like the Eagles, I also want to be able to get some more vintagey/Country tones...

I am going to put a Midrange Cut control in my guitar, so maybe I can scoop out some of the mids from the APS-2 and hopefully that will sound more vintagey... :) It still won't be as bright as the SSL, maybe not as bright as the Texas Hot, but the mids might be low enough to pass off as "vintagey". I think I want too a large a tonal range from one pickup... :smack:

Re: Flat stagger for Texas Hot?

I would suggest buying the pickup that you feel will give you the tone you want, not what somebody else thinks will look better. Are you going for looks, or for tone?
The Antiquity Texas Hot Custom Bridge single coil will help you get great vintage tone and would work great for what you're looking for. I use one in the bridge of my Strat and love it. Ant.'s are the best s.c.'s Seymour has to offer, IMHO. If you don't like the color of the pickup covers, you can always get different ones to match the others.
Sometimes you can have your cake and eat it, too.

Dude, you just actually described the APS-2. And, with the midrange cut (link?) in your guitar, you can fine tune the tone to what you want it to be. The APS-2's are plenty vintage, dont worry about it.

Re: Flat stagger for Texas Hot?

Get two APS-2's and a Twangbanger for the bridge. Its a perfect setup. Nice tele tone from the bridge when clean, but when pushed it crunches nicely. It also has a nice vintage style tone. The APS-2's are pretty much production model of a Tx Hot with flat stagger, so that you dont have to worry about.

Hey there BD....The APS2s are great pickups, but they don't have the tone nor the vibe of the Texas Hots..The Texas Hots are also stronger in output, especially the bridge position..I use the SSL,APS and the Antiquity and the Antiquities are the best of the 3...My opinion only...

Re: Flat stagger for Texas Hot?

yeah, they're stronger, but he seems pretty set on a flat magged pickup. Dont get my wrong, soon I plan on getting both the Tx Hots and the Surfers, and I'm sure they'll blow any pickup I've ever had away, but I was just trying to hook him up with something cheaper. But, the Tx Hots are a great set with the Custom bridge.

Re: Flat stagger for Texas Hot?

My bad....I re-read his original post and realized he wanted the flat-pole "look" more than the staggered pole "look." At the bridge position you could probably go either way with not too much tone difference. For the other two pickups it would depend on neck-shape as far as staggered or flat is concerned. Or, it could be that one might like the sound of a flatpole pup in place of where a staggered would normally go.
It doesn't sound like money is an issue as he was writing about custom ordering a pickup. APS's aren't cheap, either.
BD, you're gonna love those Ant.'s when you get 'em in your axe, 'bro!
My vote goes to the Antiquity. Ounce for Ounce they are the best single coil SD has to offer. I've searched for many a bridge single coil pickup I could truly like, and the Texas Hot Custom is definitely one.
My opinion only.

Re: Flat stagger for Texas Hot?

Thanks for all the advice!

Actually, my bridge pickup is a humbucker. Deciding a replacement for that is a whole different issue, but it's going to be a "vintage"-style humbucker.

Anyways, I think I'm going to go with the APS-2. Maybe 500-kohm pots will brighten them up and fiddling with a Mid-cut control can get me the tones I want. If all else fails, I'll still be able to exchange them for a pair of Texas Hots.

Thanks buddy for setting me straight also regarding the flat pole pickups...Maybe I need to start reading things like 2 or 3 times before spouting out opinions... :smack: Anyway.....Gosh I Love the Texas Hot pickups!

Hello also to my buddy Bobby(Midnite Man) :13:

John, I tried the Ant II Surfers while you were in Orlando...they might be my favorite STRAT PICKUPS I've ever used... I put them in the same MIJ '88 Fender Squire white Strat I had the Texas Hots in. They're both wonderful sets, but the Surfers are....well, you just have to try them someday! They're so good they make my original '63 Strat sound second rate compared to the MIJ Squire. Lew

Re: Flat stagger for Texas Hot?

They're alot like the Texas Hots...even have similar quacky mids, tho not as pronounced. The bass is deeper and tighter tho and the highs clearer: like fine crystal. The #2 and #4 tones sound like CRUSHED CRYSTAL...really special, IMO.

The Ant II's have the tone I felt was missing from the Texas Hots: the vintage alnico 5 Strat tone. But the Ant II Surfers are slightly louder and have alot more presence...

I guess when it comes to Strat pickups, I like alnico 5...that's the sound that attracted me to Strats in the first place.
