My wife leaves these things all over the place. It sounds like a good way to polish the inside of the slot. Not to mention the pick side would be good for running along the sides of frets to remove gunk.

I never thought about that idea on the fret edges.....ill have to pick some of those things up next time im at the store.....

This will sound stupid,
but in the old days of 1970, I had an old, old guy tell me, after *****ing about breaking strings on the saddles, "600 sand paper, then use the edge of a new matchbook cover to "polish" the area. It never broke a string unless they were old. I could bend "In the style of Albert King" for days. Did the same on the horrid plastic nuts of the time and the strings never stuck. I use TusQXL now and do any fine tuning(rare)with 1500 s.paper and polish with the back of the sandpaper, it is quite effective in most nuts, but only needed to do that on one XL nut slot.

I usually do the same thing with some very fine grit paper if I have a sticking slot. Fold it up and give it a few passes. Works if it's just a burr or a rough spot that's causing the binding. But it's a bit of a pain to use for things like string thru ferrules. The cord looks like a good idea when the slot depth is fine and you just need to maybe widen it a hair but don't need to resort to a file. Seems like the abrasive cord would get in there and conform pretty well to the existing slot and do a better job of evenly contacting the surfaces. But it's 200 grit so you wouldn't want to get aggressive with it. I noticed that they make a crocus version of the cord (stew mac doesn't sell it). That may be a better way to go for things like nut slots. Much finer grit, more like a finishing/polishing grit. At any rate, seems like the cord would work well for things like string thru ferrules and cleaning up after filing. Downside is you may several diameters and it isn't exactly cheap when you cant buy smaller rolls like those that Stew Mac sells. Still, I may give it a try.

I'm sure he probably did. I don't remember where I read it and never thought about the cleaning part until you mentioned it.

You do realize that the thread wasn't actually about cleaning/waxing nut slots with dental floss, right? I just thought it was a funny thread title. I wasn't even thinking about the dental floss "trick" when I posted it. I was actually asking about abrasive cord.

Ha! Buzzed thru your post just now and realized I'm an idiot lol XD

So....no I never heard of flossing the ferrules with something abrasive... lol XD
