Real FLoyds actually come with a brass block, just a thin one.

Those are good blocks then, like on my Gotoh Floyd..just a little thin..might actually be a good thing. Its almost not really necessary to upgrade those.
Yes, the Licensed Floyd's, especially the Takeuchi's.. are still "real"..:D

Re: FloydUpgrades brass big block!

For the puny pot metal blocks on a normal Floyd, a brass block is essential.

I'm pretty sure the standard block on an Original Floyd Rose is brass. It's just lightly plated, and it's not very big. Here's the Floyd Upgrades 32mm brass block (installed) next to the stock 37mm block (tucked in behind it).

Re: FloydUpgrades brass big block!

^ yeah, thats waht I was saying..the OFR and the Gotohs already have a very good brass block, and might even be engineered for optimal vibration transfer..thats a wild guess.
The thin pot metal blocks that come stock on the licensed Floyd's, like the JT580 Lo Pro and JT 580 Lo Pro Takeuchi ; those blocks are bad jokes.
The Takeuchi JT580 Lo Pro though, is currently my trem of choice, even over the OFR, so ...

Sorry. I was putting together this little photo essay while you and Chris were posting.

Re: FloydUpgrades brass big block!

I ordered two blocks from Keith for a couple of my Ibanez Edge trems, and those do come with a crappy pot metal block.

I am very interested to hear what kind of difference they make there.

I did notice a pleasing difference with the Floyds, so I hope to be just as happy with the Ibanez.

What differences did you notice, in going from the stock block on the Floyd to the big aftermarket one? I ask because, on my Ibanez, I never played the OFR with the stock block -- it was too tall for me to put everything together properly, so I ordered the thick 32mm block when I ordered the OFR.

Re: FloydUpgrades brass big block!

Thanks Manos! I knew the FU ones came in dif sizes. The biggest doesnt allow you to use the back plate.. personally,my retentive self, I like the plates on.... Cracks me up (and annoys me) that every trem guitar I ever see in pawn shops has no back plates..
Eh, no worries, I keep the Strat with no backplate since the stock one is white (and now I have a black pickguard) plus the blue Washie but that's also because I've lowered the trem to be flush with the body and now the block hits the plate.
I have the plate on all the others, kinda have to with the Swing otherwise the Tremol-No would get completely out of whack. :9:

Re: FloydUpgrades brass big block!

Yes, nicer and mine came with stainless hardware. I can't say if that is standard, but when you buy them 5-6 at a time, you get some perks. :D

While I would not call it polished jewelry, they are finished better than the "other" place.

Finally, you can't beat the price.

Guys name is Keith Hartley and he is pleasant to deal with, and ships quick.

Chris, I see you have a Charvel US prod model (or darivative thereof)
What size block does that take to keep the back plate on? 37? Im thinking that when I started shopping for one, FU told me the 42 would require leaving the plate off.
I have to measure my Washie WM526 cuz it has a thin body ...
I have two from F.U. and the difference WAS huge. The tone is way fatter and the sustain is great.

However as some mentioned the added thickness means a more limited pull-up range, or in my case, none at all. However I actually WANTED my Floyds to be down-only for various reasons so for me it worked out beautifully :)

BloodRose, Bro, I have the backplate on both my guitars, it's simply a matter of ordering the right height. On my Swing I removed the thin metal sheet between the base plate and block to get a good clearance but that was it so no worries there :)

What size block did you install??

My Squier body is 1.5" thick, instead of 1.75" and both the Wilkie MV trem and the current Gotoh Floyd have 42mm blocks and I could put the back plate on, but it would bulge a bit. I don't need no steeeenking backplate though. It's actually the springs protruding out the end that causes the problem. If it matters, get the 37mm.

Re: FloydUpgrades brass big block!

I'm tellin ya..talk to my man Julio Marto ( ebay's "guitarupgrades" there in Joisey). Send him your unit and he'll custom make a block as short as it needs to be for you to put the cover on.
Great guy.

Re: FloydUpgrades brass big block!

37mm is what you want for the Charvel promod. I have 4 promods and all of them have 37mm blocks.

At the time that I ordered he had only just released his 41mm block so I had to special order a block milled 4mm shorter so, 37 would be the magic number for me as well :)

Re: FloydUpgrades brass big block!

How do you determine which size would suit your axe? I'd rather not order from the US, since customs would double the prize anyway.

Kewl! Im ordering a coupla 37s . one for the charvel and one for my Kramer pacer. I have to measure the block in the WM526 before I can get one for it.. Thin body.

Gonna dial em all up as best as I can and then weed em out.. right now, much as I hate to say it Im really diggin this charvel..
