Flying V Nuts! Is there a better way of cutting a Flying V nut?

Re: Flying V Nuts! Is there a better way of cutting a Flying V nut?

They sell the locking nut/truss cover that comes with the Floyd FRX trem separately... That way you have a locking nut w/o the permanent mod.. I have a V with the FRX system and it works well

The nut:

The system:

i dont think you CAN.... or if it is possible, they sure dont make ANY effort of explaining it --- since what passes for a "diagram" on their site doesnt even mention length or headstock angle or any other dimension

Or hell, even the WIDTH... srsly wth???

You mean you cant just tap it out (with something like a piece of softwood and a hammer)?

FORGET that video. Just forget it. The guy took an easy job and made it difficult.

I was a Gibson authorized repair guy for many years. Score the finish with a sharp Exacto. Using your fret nippers, grip the nut and gently rock it back and forth and pulling straight up.
By fret nippers, I mean these....

And then there's that method, too

I scored mine as stated
Then with a screwdriver
Right over the top of the board
Drove it back with some dikes to the back of the screwdriver

That method will not work with the epoxied Corian nuts Gibson uses.

Are you forgetting that I was a Gibson authorized service center for almost a decade? It does work. Patience is the key.

Why take a chance? The number of videos on YouTube showing the damage that can occur should be warning enough.

You're kinda proving my point.

Re: Flying V Nuts! Is there a better way of cutting a Flying V nut?

The point is trying to wrestle out an epoxied in nut is asking for trouble.

Re: Flying V Nuts! Is there a better way of cutting a Flying V nut?

Agreed 100%. Epoxy or superglue is overkill when literally a dot or two of Titebond would be perfect.

Nuts generally aren’t porous. So Titebond won’t stick to it. CA is pretty standard.

If it’s a cheap plastic nut and it breaks when you remove it, so be it. Time to make a proper nut!

I use CA glue because the sheer strength is low. A couple drops will hold but a few sideways taps will break it free.

YES - Titebond will stick to a nut. That's why I have to clean the glue from the nut and the slot.
You obviously don't know me - but I've replaced thousands of nuts in 40 years at the bench.

You won’t find many pros using Titebond for nuts. It’s the wrong glue for the job.

I’ve also replaced many nuts since about 1970.

In 99% of cases I grab the nut with end nippers and wiggle it out. That’s for a Fender type nut in a slot. Otherwise just give it a tap with your fret hammer and a block of wood.

And with CA you don’t need to clean glue out of the slot because it sticks to the nut.

The only nuts that break are those hollow plastic nuts.

Really? Then I guess all the pros posting on the Official Luthiers Forum and Musical Instrument Makers Forum are just dumbasses? Guys like Frank Ford?

That or you will wake up in another country naked next to a midget.

Bro, been there and done that. Mescal is nasty stuff. Everyone should experience a midget at least once though.

Re: Flying V Nuts! Is there a better way of cutting a Flying V nut?

Yes! Tektoid is Gibson's name for Tusq. Gibson buys the blanks from Graphtech, shapes them and gives them their own proprietary name. Cheers

Re: Flying V Nuts! Is there a better way of cutting a Flying V nut?

Cool! I'm glad there's another use for those nippers. They work like a charm on overhanging fret ends

Re: Flying V Nuts! Is there a better way of cutting a Flying V nut?

Thanks, I thought of that too. I have an FRX on my Explorer but there are 2 problems with using the FRX locking nut on my Flying V.
1. The Les Trem II does not have fine tuners.
2. The Flying V truss rod cover is gigantic and the FRX locking nut will not cover the 3 factory truss rod cover screw holes.
Cheers

I like Zero Glide nuts. They are cheap, the bottom 5 frets intonate almost as good as an Earvana, the open notes sound fretted, and the strings can't bind on the nut. It also requires no permanent modifications to the guitar.

Thanks Chistopher!
I'm really considering the Zero Glide. It looks like the solution for me. I'll get some measurements and get to work! - Gil
