For EVH 5150 fans ( and those who are curious)

Re: For EVH 5150 fans ( and those who are curious)

thanks for posting that... really didn't learn anything new but others may find it interesting... The very first guitar Ed and Kramer did together was a simular copy of his original Frankie... it is said that Frankie copy was ash as well... they could of used ash in the 5150 for ED even if the Pacers were Poplar...

that being said Warmoth has many raw poplar strat bodies for cheap... they have my interest...

Re: For EVH 5150 fans ( and those who are curious)

saw you post about this on a few forums and keep forgetting to respond to your question about that wood....that's ash.

yup Mike thats what i see too. and a one piece as well.

Re: For EVH 5150 fans ( and those who are curious)

One small detail is being ignored. The guitar in the video is the dude's "REPLICA". That is not the real 5150. How the heck can you determine the body wood of the real one from someone's replica? :eyecrazy:

scroll down the post and also go to page 2 and 3 those big pics are of the real one that we are talking about not the vid.

Ahh, I see them now. Interesting. I still say basswood or poplar and with all those holes at the butt end, I'm leaning heavily towards basswood, and not just because jumbowolfe (Mike) said so.

Re: For EVH 5150 fans ( and those who are curious)

I would bet on basswood, that is Eddie's choice of wood. I just read in Guitar World, that the new Wolfgang will be basswood. The first try was made of adler and Eddie was able to tell that it wasn't basswood. But then he also went though 80 set of pickups to get the "sound", and had the neck pickup move 1/32" closer to the bridge.

Re: For EVH 5150 fans ( and those who are curious)

Basswood does not in any way have grain like that or poplar. That is what i thought as well, but it looks so so much like ash. No other wood has grain like that.

the grain is DEEP.

Re: For EVH 5150 fans ( and those who are curious)

by the way, his 'Wolfgang' guitars are getting to look more and more like Les Pauls to me. Lol

Don't know or care about EVH's guitar or underwear but I do know that your avatar picture is so awesome that I could't read more than a few words of your post without looking back at it. :1:

Re: For EVH 5150 fans ( and those who are curious)

Its an interesting dilemma. When you look at the original photographed from the top you can see those grains clearly and you gotta say that looks so much like ash...but then you see the holes for the strap pins and the back of the guitar where the paint is severely worn off and that does not look like ash to me. Personally anything from ash, poplar, alder and basswood will work for his tone, its all fairly close together. I mean even 2 identically shaped poplar bodies will resonate differently, its normal. I think the pickups, picking technique and amp will make the biggest difference. After all, if you watch the Live Without A Net DVD it doesn't matter if he's playing his Kramer 5150 or Steinberger its still the brown sound coming out of those speakers.

if your seeing ash on top and what seems to be either basswood or poplar on the back....: private:

Re: For EVH 5150 fans ( and those who are curious)

Well if you look at the back as well the grain is actually running in the path of the belly contour. This leads me to believe that it is running exactly the way the grain is. And the marks are deep the way the grain is. If you zoom in i think i can see some ash grain as well in one part where the contour meets the body. Unless its my eyes playing tricks on me.

Also look at the shot where the body is flat and you can see all the strap holes. the grain that you can see there runs throughout all the body depth and length showing that it is a one piecer as well. Suhr also commented on that.

Of course you are right when you say that Ed will sound like Ed no matter what. But even on Live without a net his sound with the 5150 IS more woody and different. slightly cause underneath its all ED.

Re: For EVH 5150 fans ( and those who are curious)

It probably is a one piece or maybe 2 piece body and I wasn't trying to say its made out of different types of wood just to clarify in case someone thought that. Just to me the side shot and back of the guitar doesn't look like ash but then who am I to know right. I'm only guessing. Whatever it is its beat to hell but still awesome cause of the history behind it. Also about the DVD yea you can hear Ed gets a more natural tone out of the 5150 of course then the Steinberger but then of course he's gonna get a more woody tone since the broom stick isn't made out of wood and has EMG actives in it but yea like I said before its still the brown sound either way. I think thats why you don't really need to worry about getting the exact wood and be paranoid if its one or 2 piece and then build a replica exactly like it.
I saw a video on youtube of David Gilmour playing Comfortably Numb sometime around '86 for some benefit concert or something, playing on a Charvel with 1 humbucker and volume knob, vintage trem though and the pickup was an EMG active humbucker (not sure which model of course) and he sounded like.....surprise....David Gilmour, that tone was there dead on and I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan.
Its still interesting to talk about this stuff though, cause usually someone always comes out of the woodwork with some great pictures or reliable inside information like we saw in the Kramer Forum thread
