i've been wanting to make a 5150 clone for years... quilty as charged i guess... i may do it oneday and use the body shape of my 87 Striker as a router template... close enough in pacer shape for me to not worry about the fine details... i also have drawn by hand a headstock shape that looks close enough to me...

but the Kramer i always wanted was a one off custom job... the white one with a rosewood board that was featured in ads with EVH in 1984/85 where he is leaning up against a guitar case wearing his No Bozo's T-Shirt... that white one was an early prototype of a Baretta and has the headstock shape of the 5150.... i may be more interested in making a copy of this axe over an EVH tribute thing...

a local shop that has a VH Frankie in stock raised the price... they want $32,500 Canadian for it now!!! up close it looks like hell!!!

You're talking about what Kramer collectors refer to as 'the grail'. Non-tilt head stock, white with rosewood fingerboard '83 Kramer Baretta. Thats the one that was featured in the No Bozo's ad. I think only like 500 were made until they switched to the tilt headstock in '85. Pretty sought after.

ya that is the one... except the one in the ad was a prototype and ever so slightly different then the production Baretta..... One of the guys at the Kramer web site told me it was a one off and Ed was romoured to of given to someone who worked for him as a gift...

but production Baretta from 84 would be fine by me...

I just have a question. Do u have to seal the body before you paint it? because i have been told that If u just paint a bare body, the wood will suck up the paint. But it does not look like ed sealed the 5150 or the frankie before he painted. Im planing on doing an inspired VH stripe job on my baretta I was just wondering about sealing the body before painting?

it doesnt look like theres any sealer on there in those pics....

also if you go read his interviews he says its just paint, no primer or anything.

if you wanted a nice smooth OEM type glossy finish, i think you'd wanna seal it

sealing it i think defeats the minimalist purpose of what ed wanted. to let the wood breathe more. i think that is.
