I have not tried the Alt 8, but the SH5 Custom has some sizzle, but tons of thump.

alt 8 is all thump no fizzle. so decide how much you want of each

The SH-5 is what you want. Deep low end without losing definition, warm and powerful, great clarity and very present treble.
DD = tight, aggressive, massive mids and cutting treble, great for thrash and downtuning
Custom = deep low end thump, warmer, fatter, treble is also present but a bit rounder, great for groove metal

Did last weekend, using an invader ceramic mag. A little more sizzle, less/more controlled bass, and more like a JB on steriods. I wouldn't say its the best for modern metal though., if that's what you're after. It was a cool sound though, just not what I'm after. And I wouild pick it over the stock alt 8, which, while has a big sound and is warmer than the invader, is just too boomy and loose on the bass for me. 500k pots open it up adn help keep the string mids from making it muddy, but I've gone back to 250k all around because 500k is just too cold sounding on my parker, which by its design is already colder sounding than other guitars.
Maybe I will try the invader with the side mags removed to see if it tightens up the bass without losing too much thump and adds any sizzle.

I'm surprised you didn't like the Alt8 with the big ceramic, I don't think of it as 80's at all, maybe that's because I remember the 80's, dunno.
What you ended up with is more or less a DD.

It could be the guitar its in. This parker nitefly is really hard to find pup matches. I've found threads in the parker forum saying even parker had trouble. They settled on a fred type pup with modified eq and slightly less output. I'm finding high pups don't work well in this guitar. Maybe it's the very thin swamp ash body and composite fret board. It does have a mohagony neck, which I why i don't think its a super bright guitar. It's actually darker than normal flys, but it is somewhat cold sounding, probably due to that fret board.
I did like the alt 8 with big ceramic, but it just wasn't my taste. I just got the polished A5 in the mail, so I'll try that.
Right now bigger concern is the neck, which is even harder to sort out with this guitar. Liquifire comes Saturday, so we'll see.
All the iterations are fine with me. I'll have som extra pups and mags to play with for the next guitar project.
