for PRS owners

hi dudes... i was wondering whats about prs... in the states there is a huge number of guys with prs on their own...but here in europe i rarely see one or two after a thousand fenders, gibson and RG/JEMs (yeah, that should be an entire brand)... and i wonder if this thing its because of the price or the quality/price, or the whole year waiting thing...or whatever

so, there, can you buy them at the moment?...but the most important question...talk about prs' pros and cons...quality, sound, what style are them oriented to in general, etc...

i have seen 2 models that seemed to be awesome...i´ll have to try them anyway, the custom 24 and the custom 22/12 (what do you think about playing a 12 string electric guitar as a soloist or a rhythm rock/hard-rock guitar?...cause paying 2500 € only for a strum electroacustic seems a little crazy to me) what do you think about them¿?

I see more and more PRS in guitar shops here in France .
I find those axes to be perfect to me , tone wise and comfort wise.

I load all my PRS with Duncans and that's it !

I prefer 22 fret necks rather than 24 , so the custom 22 would be my choice .

I've never played a 22/12 and it's not so common on the market. Only a few ones have been built so far .

While I personally prefer Jacksons for my playing/style, PRS has been known to make some pretty good guitars. Luke Duke got one and, though I would never tell him this, it's a good guitar. (I give him a hard time, because he used to not like PRS) It desperately needed the pickup change, but it's got a good, solid tremelo and locking tuners, so it stays in tune pretty well (not as good as a Floyd, but not bad). The top is beautiful. It seems to be built solidly, too.

The lower end PRSs are very easy to come by here in the States. Guitar Center carries a ton of them. You may have to search a little for the higher end ones, but they're not impossible to get.

Pros, easy, easy to play. Thick sound, but a unique to the PRS sound.

I picked mine up from instrumental music in Santa Barbara at UGD last month. I got a Custom 24 with a 10 top, and birds. The pups in it weren't terrible, they were actually real good for stock pups. I switch them out for a Jazz neck and Custom/Distortion hybrid.

I have deliberatly steered clear of them due to the price in the UK. I'd hate to fall in love with something that I couldn't afford. I didn't even play 1 at the National Music Show a couple of years ago, and PRS was signing them!!!

I used to have a Custom 22 a few years ago. It is the only guitar I ever regret selling. I think they are awesome, and as soon as my wallet let me, I'll get another. You have to wait about three months in Norway for a new one, and it is well worth it.

PRS guitars are okay, I guess.

I have three 24 fret and one 22. The pros are the craftsmanship, quality, and versatility. The cons (other than cost) are that if you're someone who want to nail Strat or LP tones, they're not gonna make you happy.
As for the price in Europe, a number of folks across the pond have bought from US dealers. Even after shipping & VAT, they save quite a bit over what their local dealers are asking.

PRS has a rather snobbish reputation here in Hungary IMO. People get vintage LP's for a much lower price. New big-brand guitars and amps are damn expensive here, quite often even three times as much as in the US.

Wow that's expensive! Are you referring to vintage as in 70's-80's?

Mid to late 70's and 80's Gibson's going for dumb prices, some folks should try playing those guitars and comparing them to the ones that came before and after.

Have a mid 90s CE24 and love it too death- I like the position of the neck pup, and 24 frets- Workmanship is superb and an incredible variety of sounds-

Have been planning a p90 mahoganey, and had planned to build it- But like PRS so much that I'm looking at the SE p90s to see if I can handle 25 instead of 25.5 scale-

However, one thing has already been pointed out and needs to be factored in- Don't think of the PRS as a replcaement for LP or fender, just becuase it get's good sounds in both of these directions- When you need a real strat or tele (especially for recording) you can't fake it (maybe with a variaxe

In other words, you will find great flexibility and the timbres can take you a wider range of directions than almost any other gtr i have ever played, and if you look to those as RPS sounds you will have a lot of fun-

But from my handle you can tell where I go for my 'real' strat sounds

I have a few pix of my PRS guitars on my guitar page.

As for pickups, I've had Dragon 1, Dragon 2, and HFS/VB pickups in my guitars. I really like the D2s but didn't care for the D1s. The HFS is a good hot pickup but the VB is pretty lame IMO.

I have a custom 22, hardtail, with 2 duncan 59s and McCarty switching. It's a fantastic guitar. I thoroughly recommend any PRS guitar.

One thing about PRS is their consistently high quality. I can walk into my local dealer and play any of the 10-15 PRS on the shelf and each one will play, look and feel as good as mine. Try doing that with gibsons.

Personally, my fave model is the McCarty, which has vintage style, low output pickups. I compared my CU22 to a McCarty and a McCarty Soapbar recently, and I was very impressed with the stock McCarty pickups. I'm less impressed with the vearious other PRS pickups like the Dragons and HFS.

What I found when comparing the three guitars was no one guitar was 'better'. Rather, they had subtle variations that would suit certain tastes/applications. i decided to keep my CU22, because I play clean a lot, and it has a more articulate bottom end than the McCartys. If I was after more of a Les Paul vibe, then the McCartys would be the way to go.

meh, PRS is too fancy pants for my tastes. I'd feel better knowing that my money went to a simple well setup strat, than a million dollar finish. Then there's the danger of hurting that finish, i'd much rather play all out and not worry about my strat getting knicked and scratched.

It's not just the top, it's the wood they use, the design, and the craftsmanship that makes PRS the new classics.

Out of 5 I've owned, I prefer the McCarty Model. I have 2 McCarties that play and sound killer. I can even put them against my LP's and often times prefer the McCarty tone over the Gibson.....and I love Gibsons! They resonate nicely and sound huge.
On my vintage sunburst one, I've left it completely stock and it sounds great.
On my teal black one, I've installed zebra C-5/59 and had a Tonepros adjustable bridge on it. Recently, I decided I don't like the added brightness of Tonepros, so I put the stock bridge back on. The C-5/59 combo sounds really good in that guitar and it's one of the best sounding guitars I've ever owned. The stock pickups are excellent, but the Duncans beefed it up nicely.
