For sale: Music Man early 1977 Stingray/early 1980 Sabre Fretless Bass
1977 Music Man Stingray with factory retrofitted fretless 1980 Sabre neck.
Body date: Jan. 21, 1977.
Neck date: Jan. 15, 1980.
No non-factory modifications, except a possible nut replacement prior to 1986.
Purchased new in 1977. Sent back to Music Man by original owner to get a fretless neck conversion in 1980. Purchased from original owner by my father in 1986. Inherited by me when he died in 2007.
The bass plays and sounds amazing. (I learned music on this instrument.) The neck is straight, and the ebony fretboard has only minor string marks (always had flats on it). It has an active humbucker (white) that is an outstanding pickup, and it has separate volume, bass, and treble knobs.
Cosmetically, it shows its age. It has yellowed quite a bit, and the finish has many nicks and cracks around the edges. The metal is tarnished, scratched, and the chrome plating has checked. The pickguard is scratched and very slightly warped. The pickup is dingy, and the pole pieces tarnished. There is a mild neck/fretboard crack near the truss rod bullet; it causes no functional issues, and it’s barely visible. The foam mutes have disintegrated, but can be easily replaced at almost no cost. However, the bass was taken care of (always cased, and never exposed to “real” weather). The wear is not due to abuse, just accidents over the years that happen if you actually play an instrument regularly.
A black ‘90’s G&L case in fair condition (one lame latch and a bit of rust on the hardware) is included.
Asking $2,000 plus shipping. I will also sell the neck alone for $1,000 (but not the body alone).
